I was tied up in one meeting after another this morning and when I finally got a chance to look at my phone there were several messages and texts from my dad and an old friend. First thought was someone got hurt. Mild Panic! Turns out the old man bought us an old sailboat to play with.
Our fried had been storing an old sailboat for a family that I've known since I was a little kid. The owner had passed away a couple of years ago and his family wanted nothing to do with the boat or paying for the storage anymore. Since they knew us they gave it to my dad for next to nothing. It's in great shape for a '79 and built buy Hunter back before they started making really ugly boats. I'll be able to go see it on Thursday to check it out. I've been looking for my sailing stuff all afternoon.
79 Hunter 30 ( this isn't it, but pretty close to the blurry pictures my dad took )

We're right in the center of the South Shore of Lake Erie and I was sailing before I could walk. Pretty much grew up on a Tartan 37, the same boat my dad sailed from here all the way to Trinidad and cruzed the Caribbean for seven years after he retired. We've been talking that one of us needs to buy another boat and this one just fell In our laps. Figure a 30' is still easily manageable for either one of us. It's decked out with furling gear and other necessities like self tailing winches, etc. From what dad says, it needs a lot of cleaning up but in really solid shape, except most of the instruments are shot. That's an easy fix, besides all we really need is a compass and radio anyway.

Wow! Stuff like that don't happen around here.
Up here, you'd see it sitting beside the road with a stovepipe out the side and a family of 6 living in it.
Good score buddy!
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.
Spend a lot of time on a 29 foot C&C in my twenties. Never sailed the carribean. My friend got his licensing so we could rent a boat in the Keys, but he got married and it never happened. Have fun with it!
It's the shallow draft version, which is good for Lake Erie (short and fat keel), need to know where you're going around here especially around the islands and the western end of the lake. Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes.
Lots of cruising stuff, wind generator, auto helm, refrigerator, water heater, furling gear. Good stuff, hopefully it all works still. The Old Man is on a mad tear to get it in the water, I think it's going to take a bit longer than he thinks but he's retired and is keeping him busy.

The older Hunters were pretty good boats. Not exactly world cruisers, but good boats none the less. The newer ones kinda "cheaped out" and became entry level family/weekend boats. One was berthed next to my boat and I just didn't care for the cheap look (rigging seemed small, spars seemed too small in diameter, etc.).

Totally agree, I grew up on Tartans and Pearsons so I'm a bit of a boat snob. I've owned a big old fat Bristol and a C&C SR21 that was lightning fast. The older Hunters were better built and had much better lines that the new ones. We'll get it cleaned up and the water, but it's not going to leave Lake Erie. The Old Man got his time in doing that, he just wants to do some day sailing on an old boat that won't break the bank.
