Where is the scabbard? I'm working on my 77 Shovel today too. Carb has always run rich at this altitude, I've ordered in some jets to tweak the carb.

S&S Super E, the older series that has the main air bleed that is just a drilled .040" hole. I'm gonna open it up to 5/16"-24 thread so I can just screw in a main jet what ever size I need to tune it. The ones they've built since 2004 come that way.

This bike came with a SS then i put a Bendix on it but this bike is real cold blooded on start up so now i have a Mikuni on it.
I think a CVA would work good but i didn`t want to spend the money for as much as i ride it.

That's pretty darned cool!
I'm picking up a '95 Sportster in a couple of days. My Brother in law owes me some $ and offered up his bike instead. I'm not sure how good of shape it's in, looks ok but haven't heard it run yet. I'm a dirt bike, dual sport guy so Street bikes are new to me. We'll know more in a couple of days how well it runs.
Anyway, that side car is wicked cool, Lenn! Have fun!!

Will do. I'll need some help getting it running and really, what I should do with it. Gonna ride it for the summer, but after that I'd really like to trade it off for a new/ used Dual sport. I had a Kawasaki KLR 650 for years and wouldn't mind a new one but I'd really like to upgrade to a BMW GS 1200. That single cyl on the Kaw was a real B Breaker, but it always started on the first try and ran perfectly every time. Shouldn't have sold it!

Love that sidecar Pitchy. You know the early ones were wicker to save weight. Since I can't ride with this new knee I could put the car on my 66 and actually get some use out of it. I'm running an S&S Super E on mine and it's always been too rich but it starts so good and runs so smooth I hate to change anything.

This car is heavy, it started out as a leaner but didn`t work out so i welded it up so it was solid, i like them on the heavy side so they don`t lift on ya on the right turns.

That is one handsome outfit you have created there Lenn, don't see many sidecars over here now but when I was growing up they were a very common form of family transport.

Bill, they and BSAs etc were very common in England after the war, before folks could afford to buy a car. I always wanted a Panther without a sidecar, they used to joke that the slow reving engine fired every other lamp post... I had forgotten about your sidecar rig Pitchy, looks good!
The handlebar wobble should be able to be tuned out with adjustment of the toe in and lean angle of the bike.
I caught the motorcycle spark again a year or so again after seeing a 1949 Panhead custom. I couldnt afford the older ones that I really liked, particularly knuckles, which is what I had the longest. I ended up settling for a practically brand new year bike, an 84. It already had electric start, which is pretty expensive to add to the older ones.
With my health limitations, I realized id probably need a sidecar in case my back, shoulder or hip spazzed out when I stopped, I can also take the dog riding with one. Searching around the net I was repeatedly referred to the adventure rider forum https://advrider.com/f/ they have an entire section of sidecar info, all sorts of makes and models of sidecars. I found used DMC car that I can adapt to my bike. I hope to be able t get it done this summer. Its been a slow process.
So Pitchy, if you read a bit on that forum, you can find the info to tune your rig, it should be good hands free on the road when adjusted right. Theres various schools of thought on different aspects, but the basics are the same with toe in and lean angle. The roads you ride on the most can affect it, but you should be able to find a happy median adjustment for all around riding that isnt too much of a workout.

On the forum I mentioned above, theres a number of threads about making sportsters into offroad or dual purpose bikes.Thers also tons of videos on offroad sportsters. Of course any bike can be a dual purpose bike, o road scads of dirt roads on my 47 Knuckle in Az, both in the swingarm frame and a couple years in the hardtail frame. The 84 Low Rider i now have is going on dirt road exploring rides, its one of the things I really miss.
This guy and this video helped inspire me, this guy retreated from the greater world from his chef work after his son passed. He winters in the Big Bend country, and rode his bike and sidecar with his dog all over the west in the summer. He has tons of videos.

That dog gone sprocket changed out so easy so ya know what that means, dern rear brake won`t pump up now
Yep it is full of fluid, can`t figure what happened.

if you search youtube for harleys on dirt theres a few guys regularly doing videos and showing what they did to the bikes, mainly sportsters of course. the ones that get really serious swap the front ends with good dirt bike front ends and put longer shocks on the back among other things. Of course, some of us have just never been too bright and took our big twins everywhere they would physically go, only occasionally scraping the frame on rocks, and seeing a lot of back country.
The 47 made a fair deer hunting rig.
The new(er) one has good ground clearance, actually about the same as the old one in the swing arm frame with the 4 over FL front end.

I've always wanted to do a Sportster dual sport conversion. Need a chain drive donor, though.
I saw a ton of "Harley's on dirt" on our recent trip to Alaska. I kept telling my son I wouldn't do that to mine!
Saw hundreds of adventure bikes. That is definitely the way to go! My son got all excited to run the AlCan with a BMW GS or KTM. There was a rumor Harley was going to make an Adv. bike soon.

Man O Man, my introduction to Harleys was when my Grandpa would take me to watch the hillclimbs in San Berdu, where the majority of them fell over backwards before they got near the crest..... that was my entire moto education until I got one .. . . .. .I saw a ton of "Harley's on dirt" on our recent trip to Alaska. In years past, people rode any motorcycle they had, including all the old models of H-Ds on any conceivable sort of road or trail, its what they had, and they just went and did it. I did much the same with mine in the past, some guys that went riding with me said theyd never go again, but I had a blast, as did several friends that liked the same stuff. So long as the frame doesnt hang up, you can get in all sorts of places, I just diodnt go very fast on the rougher stuff. Gravel or average quality dirt roads, no problems. Sadly, one old friend that I used to ride with, when i asked him if hed go dirt roading again like we used to said he wasnt going to take a $25k harley on dirt roads. It didnt bother him with his 77 low rider. In a way Im glad my budget isnt in the same bracket as his currently, i have a bike im not the least bit afraid to take anywhere I took the old knuckle. If it breaks, you fix it and go on, though i really had little trouble when out tooling around in the N Az backroads.

Yup.
I rode dirt bikes for many years. I've all the things I've done, it's the thing I miss. When I was real young, I remember when people rode whatever they dad in the woods. It really is amazing how tough that stuff was.
My first bike was a 73 Yamaha DT250. I was fairly young and it was big and heavy.

When i was a kid they had a hill climb near by and i was amazed on how the Harley`s were the only ones that blasted over the top.
The next thing that lit my board was when i was a bus boy at a super club when in my teens and a club member took me for a ride on his scooter, that did it for me and when i could get the cash i bought my first Harley.
Rode dirt bikes and scooters anything on two wheels as a kid but when i got my first Harley in 1975 a Sportster which i immediately chopped and rode across the country several times i was then in Heaven.
Now it`s 2019 and have had a motor cycle every year since the beginning and only God`s protection has kept me alive.
Been good and bad that has come from riding Harley`s and drinking and i thank God for watching after me so i can be of use to Him in some way.
Ride to live and live to ride.

I been lucky too when I think on it. Had two buddies busted up just this year on bikes.
Oh, the reason the Harley's work good on the climbs is torque. Less shifting than the 2 strokes and single cylinder 4 strokes. Down side is weight, so you gotta keep em pointed right!

The Harley hill climbers back then had swing arms or frames that were stretched out way long to keep them from flipping over, when they let loose it was one straight loud blast over the top.

Yeah, I've seen those +6, +12, and more, swingarms. I had a two position one on my old trials bike. It does make a huge difference for climbing.

Back in that day the dealers only had stock pretty whimpy bikes to climb, the Harley`s were all custom built long and lots of power it was a sight to behold.

A tale of two Harleys. After I moved to Berkeley to build a world cruising sailboat and ran out of money I got a job driving a 74 cu.in. Harley with a sidecar that looked like this, sorta. The box was bright red plywood.
This was in San Francisco driving for a film developing lab. Took finished photos out and brought back film to be developed and printed. Split shift, 6 days a week, for 3-1/2 years. I put over 100000 miles on that rig. 3 forward speeds and reverse. Talk about fun. It would burn rubber in reverse as far as I wanted to. It would beat almost anything on the street between the lights on the short city blocks.
Because of the split shift I had around 4 hours between trips. What's a young man to do? Spend a lot of time at the S.F. Public Library researching cruising sailboat designs. I couldn't afford internet.
Oh yeah, I found some old moto parts, listed in want ads I suppose. Used payphones to contact sellers I imagine. I was so poor I couldn't afford a smart phone or wi-fi. But somehow I collected a frame, an engine, a springer front end, a couple of wheels and miscellaneous nuts and bolts. Right there in my apartment in Berkeley there grew a hard tail 45 cubic inch flathead Harley with springer front end, suicide clutch and stick shift.
I used to ride that thing on the Marin County Sunday morning breakfast run from Sausalito Heliport to Point Rayes Station where there was a diner. I think there were more than fifty bikes participating, but they were in small groups and you could choose the amount of traffic you wanted to enjoy. This was an all out road race for those equiped to do it. They were exceeding 100mph on the short straightaways. This was when the Yamaha twins were just out and the racers geared them for the twisty narrow Route 1. That bike felt like there was a large hand in your back pushing you up the road.
Me, I cruised along in stately wonder, riding the torque curve, listening to them stack up behind me in the tight esses. Briiing, briiing, ziiiiing... This must have been a thing to see from a photo drone because they could not pass me on the steep uphill climb a little north of Sausalito. I generally left old Flat Head in second gear, and using the road from shoulder to shoulder Flat Head would fend off the pack. They were so busy downshifting and upshifting thru the turns that they could not pass me until a certain straightaway. Then they would blow by, hit a ton, and jockey to get through the next esse first. This little thrill was reproduceable and no one ever got past Harley in those twisters.

Don't have it home yet but stopped by the dopey BIL's house ( which I own, and the reason he's giving me the bike) for a picture.
Boss lady want's me to sell it but I'm going to fool around with it for now. I like the idea of turning it into a scrambler.
Hoping to get it home tomorrow afternoon.
If anyone has any interest in the Honda, he will let it go for $500.
