Question on Lyman No.2 sight mounting screws

Post by geobru »

Does the Lyman No. 2 tang sight for 1886 Winchesters come with screws that fit original 86's? The catalog descriptions say they fit Winchesters too, but does that only mean "modern" Winchesters?

A friend of mine has a couple of the newer Browning 86's and the threads are different than the originals. IIRC, the threads on the Browning were finer.

Has anyone here run into any problems installing a tang sight with new screws in the older guns? I guess the real questions are, do the sights come with two sets of screws with the different threads, or do the new Winchesters have different threads than the Brownings, or do you have to cut new threads over the old?

I would appreciate any clarification you might be able to offer.

I've only mounted them on modern Miroku Winchesters, but the sight(s) came with only the one extra-long tang screw (and a second shortie for the front).

The current Lyman I have purchased recently have come both ways. One I bought had both a metric screw, an NF threaded screw (and the front screw) in the box, several had only the NF screw. Japanese manufacturing is metric. Also, the last Lyman I bought had a 10/32 TPI front screw as opposed to the 3/16/36 TPI screw that is correct for American Winchesters. Go figure.
