Two Questions - .44mag range & Pig Hunting

Post by kmittleman »

Hi Everyone,

I have two quick questions. One, what's the effective hunting range of a .44 mag levergun? Also, where do you shoot a hog? Is it the same as a deer? I ask because my Dad and I are going to hunt hogs in Texas this summer, but I've heard they can be hard to kill. Any advice?

Thank you!!

My biggest pig at over 300 pounds was also my farthest pig shot with my 44 mag at 125 yards, he dropped like a ton of bricks with one round 240 grain JSP. Aim lower then with a deer, pigs heart lower just behind the front leg about where the elbow of front leg is.

With my handloaded 240gr JSP from a leveraction and solid rest, I wouldn't hesitate on a shot at 100yds. I'd go a little further if there was no wind.

...and I don't think he even knows it...Walks around with a half-assed grin...If he feels fear, he don't show it. Just rides into hell and back again.

100 to 125 yards is about max for me with a 44 mag lever gun. I use 300 grain XTP's with a max charge of 2400
