Post by 1894cfan »

Does anybody here have a load worked up for the Hornady .308cal 86gr sp for 30/30 Win? I'm looking for a plinking/coyote load for this bullet. TIA

I use 27 gr. IMR 3031 for the Sierra 85 gr. RNSP... This was the "trapper" load we talked about a few months ago. It duplicates the old 1920s (IIRC) load but is using a SP instead of the FMJ in the original.
Sincerely,

Thanks, Hobie. I just picked up a fresh container of IMR 3031. Now to pick up a box of bullets, load some up and head to the range to sight the Win 94 in. ;-)

Hobie,
I can't seem to remember. what kind of velocities were you getting with that load?

Ummmm.... jeez, I can't remember either. So I looked it up, 1877 fps avg velocity for 665 fpe. Remember, the original load was for FMJ to kill without damaging pelts and to shoot to point of aim at 25 yards. This load will do the latter but the soft point PISTOL bullet might well be a mess on game. I haven't had the opportunity to try it.
Sincerely,

Hobie

1894cfan,
Interestingly, in testing, I found that the replication of the Peters "Trapper .30-30 Cartridge" shoots to within 1" of the same point of impact as the standard 170 gr. factory load at 50 yards.

Other loads that I tried which replicated the 27/3031 is either 18 grs. of 4759 or 4227.

For 2,500-2,600 f.p.s., 30 / 4198 works pretty well.

And I have found that even with velocities as high as 3,100 f.p.s. (26" barrel-Rel 7 powder) accuracy was still very good - 1 1/2" @ 100 yards. :D

Dang it. Looks like I'm going to have to start buying my 3031 in bulk instead of by the pound.

Thanks for that one, w30wcf. I'd much rather go with SR4759, I've got lots of that one from working up reduced loads for my Ruger M77RSI .308.
Anybody got any loads for Hornady 100 Short Jacket, Speer 110JHP or Sierra 125JHP with SR4759?

8-14 gr. IMR SR4759 with any of those bullets in the .30 WCF. Each of my .30-30s handles those loads differently as to accuracy. Just had to prove that every gun is different, I suppose.
