Deer Hunting in Florida.....

Post by RIHMFIRE »

did not work out to well this weekend in Ocala National Forest
Here is the the mark of a very large black bear.....that is well over 7 foot
Image
I was sitting about 40 yards from this pond....about 18' up in a pine, with the wind in my face.
Image
A sow and here cub came in around 7:45 for a drink. +/- 250 pounds. After they both got there drink...a long one,
I scared them off....
Image
A third bear was a young boar....about 250 pounds as well, came in exactly on the same trails as the sow...
I let him drink his share as well and then told him to beat it.....
but he decided to show his dominance and started really low barking and snapping his jaws....
but he had enough when he could not find me...
Image
the fourth bear was a little smaller....a boar also...
After the forth bear came in it was obvious I was in the wrong spot....
This pond is usually 10 times the size of what you see there.....but we are in a long drought...
and I would have bet my last nickle I was going to see deer here....
Last weekend I sat on a different pond and saw 8 does, 2 small bucks and a pretty good size bear....
On the way out, there was a lot of scat.....Later that same day....about 5 or 6 miles south of there,
sitting on another pond...yep you guessed it....
but this bear did not come in....it stayed in the woods making a racket..eventually caught my wind and left...

What part of the forest are you in? I spend a good bit of time around Hopkins Prairie.

You weren't in the wrong spot.. You just had the wrong tag!
This is plagiarized from someone else, but I love it!

I was born a gun owner.
It wasn't a choice.
I didn't become one later in life.
I was born this way.

Bear season was called off this year because of anti hunting BS....
Last year there was a quota of 325 bears....or something close to that....and that quota was filled in 2 days...and the season halted.

Hawkins,
I was just off 33, northwest of Hopkins Prairie, and just south of where they are thinning the forest,
2 1/2 miles south of Salt Springs

Yep, that's real close to where I like to go. I'll usually go in on the Florida Trail around the prairie, then branch out from there. Very pretty area, though there has been some logging around it. I've seen a bit of bear sign there, but never actually come up on any bruins.
