.22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer...
.22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer
It was invented in the 1960s by P.O. Ackley to set a world record for firing bullets at over 5000 fps (1524 m/s). The round failed to reach the desired velocity, but reached 4600 fps with a 50 grain bullet and 105 grains of H570 powder. It is based on the .378 Weatherby Magnum cartridge case, necked down to .224 calibre.

I'd like to see the gun.

The loading for that round are on page 175 of the Po Ackley Pocket Manual. My copy was printed in 1970.
One of his recipes that I used back then was for my 1892 .357 Magnum rifle = 160 grain JSP at 2135 fps.

There were multiple versions of the full length 50 BMG necked to .22. They achieved about 5,000 according to one account.

It would have to be the work of a barrel maker, every 132 shots, you,re burn,t out, and have to neck up to the .243, then .257, then the .260, then 7mm,.......

I remember reading about this in a gun magazine a long time ago. My how things have changed to be able to obtain higher velocities.

A barrelmakers dream - lotsa repeat business!
Re: .22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer...
What material was used for the bullet? Wouldn't lead be too soft and have too low of a melting point for those velocities? Solid brass may be effective.

1894 fan - you are correct. My wife took a deer with a 140 grain Speer half jacket from my .357 mag rifle and it took out a 6 inch diameter hole on the off side of the neck. DRT.
Reckon I had loaded it a bit too hot?

Anyone on here have the patience and time to make a few to sell? I'm sure a few of us look like one for display
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

As posted above, this is not Ackley's round. Probably a photo shop.cshold wrote:

I wouldn't recommend swallowing one, probably hard on the first 2 or 3 inches of the barrel.Sixgun wrote:I bet that baby is easy on the throats.---6

Actually, that was the 146gr HP? Didn't care as much for those. Speer kept making those for a few more years, guess the tooling held up a bit better than the 160's.crs wrote:1894 fan - you are correct.
