White folk, non white folk, dogs and cats -

The local ASPCA was having a free vaccination day so my wife decided that we'd take the three kittens and a couple others and get them boosters and shots as needed.
Well we got there and my estimate was there was at least 150 people ahead of us.

Here is my observations:
>There were more non whites than whites there.
>Almost all non white folks had dogs ... only a couple had cats.
>White folks had dogs and cats
>Most of the dogs the non whites had were larger breeds with some smaller ones.
They ran the gamut from full sized pit bulls to a doberman and on down to a tiny rat sized dog. Most of the large breed dogs were bulldogs of some type. Mostly though they were pit bulls. Every color combo you could want.
>Most of the dogs the white folk had were small dogs. A few large dogs were in the mix. One that literally dwarfed the full size doberman looked sort of like a brown lab but twice as big.
The cats were mostly in cages but those I saw were every color and size including a Bengal looking cat on a harness and leash. He got lots of attention.
The classiest pair of dogs was an English bulldog and a Chinese pug bull. They had attitudes to match.

They ran out of everything but the rabies shots and the ID chips, so we got certificates for that and free spaying for those that needed it as well as free flea drops.

An interesting day but for the arthritis in my legs and back and the cold wind. I could have done without both of those.

Did you draw any conclusions from your observations?

The only conclusion I came to, and I'm not sure it's valid, is that non whites seem to prefer the bigger breeds of dogs.

Other than that, nothing really.

I had the opportunity to pick up and fondle a pit bull pup. Solid as a rock and he weighed a lot more than I figured he would. Nice puppy.

Certain folks of whatever race may feel the need for dogs for protectionrather than fun/companionship. Nothing wrong with that.

Too bad our socialist system has anyone lining up for "free" anything....someone pays for it, and it is usually the working-class stiff that gets fleeced...

Sadly I agree with you on the last part. But our two incomes that should be "enough" isn't. And we've still not got caught up with the move. Mostly me cos my health has gone down the toilet since the e-coli thing two years ago. I've never bounced back.
So we did need the help.

My wife was talking to the people at the ASPCA yesterday and talked to them about funding. I told her about this thread and she just told me that the local SPCA gets their money not by tax payers but by donations and grants.
There is a donation box at PetSmart and other places and then added to that the grants.
So it's not tax paid for by tax payers. That's gotta be a good thing.

Griff, my wife and I have had pets since we were wee youngsters. To us they are as important as our human family members.

Good to know about the funding and I wasn't meaning to slam you for going - we have done some similar thing at the county fair for years. In the local case it is a marketing thing the area veterinarians fund.

I just think the socialist part that sucks is that people like you who have worked hard wind up not being financially comfortable and having to wait for events like that to afford to do the right thing.

Anyway, glad you got the critters taken care of; too many folks shirk that duty.

I truly hate to stereotype in today's PC society, but i also recognize that the noble Pit Bull and its many variants and mixes is the preferred pooch of the lower income society, -- whether they be black, white or latino.

They project a "tough" image and what Doc said about possibly needing them for home security is valid too

That said, it broke my heart when i toured several dog pounds looking for my own lost dog a few months back , when i saw that 75% of the pooches there were Pits and Pit mixes

The staff there ssaid the owners dont care and let them roam wild, recklessly breeding, and when they do get nabbed by the pound, are rarely claimed as the owners would rather get another one than pay the fine

One of the reasons we got this house so cheep (rent wise) is because of just that. The previous renters were keeping a pit bull in the house and it messed the floors pretty bad. The owner evicted him. Turns out his is a drug dealer and the FW PD are hunting him pretty hard.

I don't see the pit bull bread in any different light than any other dog. Raise them right, treat them good and they'll be good dogs.

What you said is sooooo very true. But I couldn't stand living in a neighborhood filled with ........ elderly folk. Ugh, all those wrinkles and walkers ..... and EMTs and wailing ambulances every night. Ugh, at least around here in the affordable housing area there's some variation. I remember back in pharmacy school, I lived in a fairly ordinary apartment building but in a 'marginal' neighborhood, but a friend of mine lived right next to a bar and the buildings were actually connected all down the block. His bedroom window was right on the sidewalk, and one of those older big ones that started only 30 inches or so above the floor (and sidewalk). He was always hearing fights out there, and wondering if someone would come crashing through the window.

His landlord would show up sometimes with a bag of pills and (since he knew we were in pharmacy school) ask my friend "Hey are these the real thing...?" The funny part was that as students, we never really got near the schedule II things that dealers were usually selling, but my friend said the landlord usually had a couple guys with him "who kept their hands in their coat pockets, and who looked like they might be really upset if I told them the pills weren't 'the real thing'", and since he didn't want them upset because they might take their hands out of their pockets, he just always said "sure"...

I'm not speaking for Blaine -- but i can verify i have witnessed this too , as i nurtured a "recreational level" cocaine habit about 15 years ago. I put "recreational" in quotations as that mess is a slippery slope that a person can very easy go over.

I remember one individual keeping the merch in a little barrel under the dog's chin (large pit bull, but friendly , not mean or abused -- although i wouldnt ever provoke him ) -- the barrel looked like the ones you'd see in a cartoon under a St BErnards chin but it was full of dope


I'm glad to say my desire for Bolivian booger sugar has long since passed, but i readilly admit on a trip to Colorado a few months ago, i did partake of a couple of legally enhanced brownies --- that was entertaining and with much less calories than getting drunk --- I figured i was old enough to give 'er a whirl,

I did utility work for over 16 years, and had to be on customer's properties. In my AO, mostly meth, and pot dealers. Mostly white, and hispanic.
Typical, is having more than one staked out on chains so there is no clear path to the house.
I suspect you are trying to hang a label on me rather than acknowledge that you understand what I'm talking about.
