OT a little- Hunting combo.

Post by 2ndovc »

The '03 Sporter belonged to my Grandfather on my Dad's side. He was a dedicated bolt guy and loved to have, at that time, cheap surplus rifles customized to his particular tastes.

The barrel on this one was shortened to 18" and every last ounce of metal that could be take off was removed. The original scope failed and I put on the Bushnell. the cheapie scope was supposed temporary but that was about ten years ago! He had it custom made for a Canadian moose hunt that never happened. Not long after the rifle was done he had a heart attack and never fully recovered. It went pretty much untouched until my 21st birthday when my Dad gave to me.

I hunted with the old girl for many years and have taken several deer including a nice big eight pointer. That's his old ivory handled kife in the picture too.

The Model 29 was given to me by my Uncle. He bought it the 60's like a bunch of guys after "Dirty Harry" came out. I was over his house one day and spotted the mahogany case on a shelf. He pulled it down to show me and mentioned he was thinking about selling it. A couple days later he called and asked me to stop and haul away an old fridge. He wasn't going to be home but just to let myself into the garage. I got there and there was the model 29 sitting on the fridge along with two boxes of shells that he's bought with it ( only 20 rounds missing) and a note to go have some fun!! My first .44 :D I had the stag grips made for it a few years ago.

Haven't taken a deer with the .44 yet but I will!

You're thinking negatively. You mean that you bet that they "grip". 8)

They're not that bad. I don't load the 29 that hot. It seems to like the milder load. Ten grains of Unique and 240 SWC is it's favorite, not a huge bang but you know you're shooting a 44. That and the thing is a little barrel heavy :D .

Nothing like family hand-me-down guns!

IMO you have a couple of nice ones, there.

Might as well face it, you're addicted to guns . . .

That is a beutiful 29. I tried to buy one a couple of months ago but I couldn't find one with that barrel length. Had to settle for a 4inch that kicks like a mule.

Can you use the safety on that rifle with the scope on there?

The safety is an aftermarket replacement that changes the original three position to a short throw on/off. It does go tight against the scope but you get used to it.

Thanks for the nice words everybody.
