Oven Degreaser?
Anybody use oven degreaser on their firearms to clean them?

Re: Oven Degreaser?
Not a smart thing to do. Its OK to use oven cleaner on wood that you are refinishing as the deep cleaners will soak out the oil and even raise dents. If you put that stuff on the metal parts, you will wind up with bright metal in the morning.---------6
Re: Oven Degreaser?
Good heavens no. A strong base like oven cleaner will wreck any wood finish, and while it might not dissolve the iron oxide of bluing like an acid will, there is no point at all in risking it. If you have gummed up oil on metal parts, try acetone first.
Personally, I won't even use it on wood, there are simply better ways of doing whatever it is you want to do.

I've even stopped using Gun Scrubber on anything other than the chamber of my AR after shooting cheap ammo.
It's hit and miss on what finishes it will mar or destroy, including night sights.
And oven cleaner has some potent fumes

And that's why we ask before hand. Thanks!

I've used Easy Off on surplus guns. Mostly Mosin Nagants that were just rifle shaped blobs of hard cosmoline. It's rough on the wood though, really opened up the grain. I wouldn't use it on anything of real value.
Slow is just slow.

Closest I get to that is using the dishwasher to clean BP handguns. Shh! don't let the wife know.

The only thing I've ever used it on that was wood is oil and grease impregnated SKS stocks, that and a power washer at the car wash. Works good too. Much to aggressive on any good wood for me.cas wrote:I've used Easy Off on surplus guns. Mostly Mosin Nagants that were just rifle shaped blobs of hard cosmoline.
