Marlin - Glenfield Model 30 ??

Post by 86er »

I was offered one of these for $175 in 95% condition. Allegedly unfired.

Were they factory D/T'd for scope mounts or receiver sights?

What makes it any different than a 336?

Thanks

As far as I know, the Glenfields were identical to the Marlins of their time period.
The were different in that they used a cheaper hard wood for the stock and forearm rather than walnut.
Mechanically they were the same.

I believe they were D&T'd for sights and scopes.

They were D&T'ed. At least mine is...I've had it since 1975 and took my first deer with it...one of these days, I'll outfit it with some proper wood....

Most Glenfields and Marlin 30s that I've see were D&T for both a scope base and receiver sights. I did see a few Marlin 30s, late manufacture and sold by Wal-Mart in the last six-eight years or so that were NOT D&T for a receiver sight, but were so for a scope base, and a scope base was included with the rifle.

$175 is a great price for decent as-new Glenfield or Marlin 30, IMO and experience.

I have a Glenfield Model 30. The stock is made of birch rather than black walnut and yes they are D/T'd at the factory for scope mounts and receive sights. The magazine tube ends about 2" after the forearm, however, mine still holds 5 rounds in the tube compared to the 6 rds that my 336 holds even though the tube runs the length of the barrel. The Glenfield (at least mine) does not have the micro groved barrel and is very accurate.

First new gun I ever bought, back in the '60's. Now my ten year old daughter uses it.

Bought it at Treasure Island for $39.99, with case, Tasco scope (long gone), sling, and a box of ammo...$68+ change out the door.

I'd have hurt myself getting the money out of my wallet. Such guns are going for $225+ around here and there are zero mechanical differences compared to the standard Marlin offerings of the same time period.
Sincerely,

Hobie

All right - I paid for it and it is on the way. The story I was told is that a lady received it as a gag in around 1980. It was kept in the closest, no case, no cleaning, no attention until she recently parted with it. She said she never had ammo and didn't know what caliber it was - no wonder it's unfired.

Now if I could just get some 110-125 grain bullets going around 2800 fps...

This is my Glenfield 30GT. It was purchased at the Western Auto in Lusk, Wyoming in 1979. Barrel length is 18.5 inches. This carbine is a great companion for hunting mulies in rough country.

I was told the stock is beech and not birch.
