I see it two different ways and unfortunately the story was not clear on the intent.
If it was meant as an Art project.... I agree with you 100%
If it was meant as a social experiment to see how many people in that particular institution would avoid stepping on the flag (or go out of their way to step on it) together with a record of who did what.... i.e. young people vs. older people...... immigrate students vs. citizens..... men vs. women......
I would be very interested in the results.....

I too would be interested in the result ... not the "art". It seems that the intent was to see the response of the students and not necessarily to lay flags on the ground to be walked on. Didn't the article mention that 95% of students walked around rather than on the flags? If that's the case, that's a higher percentage of respect that I would have guessed. I may be out of touch ... soon to be bitter and clingy.
... I love poetry, long walks on the beach, and poking dead things with a stick.
