Rossi 65 Rear Sight Moving

Post by The Preacher »

Hey folks. Good to be signed up here at Leverguns. I recently picked up a hardly used Rossi 65 in 45 Colt that seems to be one heck of a neat little rifle. Two issues with it though; First it doesn't seem to want to feed 100% of the time when I'm unloading it. The cartridges won't come out of the tube and I have to press in on the little piece of metal on the left side of the receiver. When shooting it I don't seem to have an issue with this. Any suggestions? Also the rear sight is sort of 'riveted' to the base and I've found that the entire sight has a tendency to move left or right affecting POI. I'm thinking of replacing it with a Marbles rear sight from midway but am wondering if there's a fix to the moving rear sight. Peening the underside? Or just scrap it. Thanks for any help you can give me. Glad I found this sight.

Measure the dovetail. Some are over the 3/8" standard.
Sincerely,

The rear sight looks to be riveted to the dovetailed base that goes into the dovetail on the bbl. The sight itself, not the base can be moved by hand a bit back and forth. And that little piece of metal on the left inside of the frame may be the Cartridge guide stop and the cartridge guide left. That's what I'm pushing in on to release the cartridges from the magazine tube. I apologize for a lack of a better description as I'm a bit new to the Rossi.

Howdy preacher and welcome to the fire.

That piece mounted off the left cart guide is called the cartridge stop. Make sure the left cart guide screw is tight first. If that doesn't do it the gun will have to come apart and the lower left front edge of the bolt will need adjusting.
As for the rear site being loose. It sounds like the leaf is loose on the base because the rivet is loose, is that correct? If that is the case give the rivet a wack and see if it tightens it, then stake the base there by the leaf. As Hobie said the dovetail in the barrel of you InterArms imported Rossi 92 is oversize, about .400. Marbles made a site for the Rossi's for awhile but then stopped. So all the available sights are .375 and just fall through the dovetail.
I have some stock sites if you want to replace it.

Thanks for the advice Steve. I checked the cartridge guide screw and it was indeed a bit loose, by about a quarter turn. I tightened it up and ran two dummies through and both came out of the magazine tube and fed fine. I'll probably but a dab of lock tight on it in the future then give it a go at the range to double check. I'll work on the rear sight when I get a chance. Right now the local prevailing virus is working on me. Steve I'll drop you a PM if I need another rear sight. Thanks again folks for all your help. These little lever action Rossi's sure are sweet rifles.
