Spring Time/Tornado Time in Texas - UPDATED PIX
Heavy rain and hail up to softball size in the Denton area with funnels sighted, but not on the ground - strongest winds measured at 82 mph! Two storms in two hours hit Denton and the first one just passed over Wolfe City and our hunting lease. We will have to do damage assessment when thing dry out.
There are several other super cell thunderstorms to the south west and moving our way now. We need rain, but not the hail, sometimes you have to take the bad with the good.
PIX of damage:
Play house a total loss and big limbs down too:
Tarp over 4 x 8 foot hole in roof; roof also raised visibly in two places - more than just shingles needed, but State Farm was out yesterday with mobile offing in a little van and has already given me $$.
We began putting the tarp on in a light sprinkle but it was hailing and raining HARD, and blowing again before we finished. Used buckets to catch the water coming through the ceiling and a bunch of beach towels to mop it all up. So, it seems the wood flooring did not get wet enough to damage it.
Contractor due soon to see where and when to start repairs.

Re: Spring Time/Tornado Time in Texas
Hey!
You weren't one of those people complaining about the long winter were you?
April 2, 1982 3 large tornadoes cut a pretty wide swath through our town. My wife was still living at home with family. They had a house fire in Feb and were almost ready to move back in, when the tornado wrecked it again.

I grew up in Liberal, KS. Just as in Amarillo, TX, you do get "That Feeling" and you know it is happening. I think it is the sudden pressure change. Don't mess with a tornado.

Made it safe though the storm. I saw a lot of broken car windows and damage. Will post some pictures tomorrow.

Re: Spring Time/Tornado Time in Texas
Yep. Tornados suck. So much destruction, and very little warning.
We've had three cross our property in my lifetime, but fortunately minimal building damage and nobody ever injured. LOTS of flattened and mangled/twisted trees in the most recent one, though. You realize how much POWER there is when you see 24" diameter shagbark hickory trees twisted around twice on their shattered trunk, then laid over, and there is a 50-acre swath of that kind of damage - AND realize it all happened in five or ten seconds...!

Re: Spring Time/Tornado Time in Texas
Was driving in it just south of McKinney. Torential rain.
It's both entertaining and aggravating drivng though quarter sized hail.
I guess I'll see what the damage is tomorrow.

Re: Spring Time/Tornado Time in Texas
I spoke to CRS and everybody is OK but damage was sustained. He has lost a portion of his roof and is without power. Too dark out to see what else is damaged. Some tornado's came through this area and a few homes were destroyed but as of right now no deaths are being reported. CRS said he will try to update everyone tomorrow. Say some prayers for those in need please.

I was hoping we would miss the worst of it but still get some good rain. We didn't get either. Prayers for all that were hit with the bad stuff.

Re: Spring Time/Tornado Time in Texas
Guess I should have not mentioned tornados!
Time to assess damage to roof and such and call insurance company and contractor about replacing roof and fixing hole left by 4 x 8 section that was blown out into pasture, Going to need ceilings replaced in two room too.
Also need to check cars for hail damage. PIx and such later.
Wife and daughter are going ahead with a friends baby shower tomorrow afternoon !
also, no damage to travel trailer where Aussie are to bunk Monday and Tuesday night. Just lucky, I guess.

We get summer, and we get winter with intermittent summer. Honestly, the latter is more better.

Glad to hear that it's not horrible bad. Coulda been worse.
Denton took quite a beating, SOFTBALL sized hail. Dang.

Re: Spring Time/Tornado Time in Texas - UPDATED PIX
PIX added.
Some folks have been through a tornado, but for those that have not, when the thing reaches you (hidden well I hope) there is the intense roaring of the wind, then total silence and a pressure change as the funnel passes over you (we felt and heard this) and then the intense wind noise again(in our case this was accompanied by the sounds of the roof on the east end of the house being lifted a bit and the 4x8 foot section of plywood shingle base being ripped out). The debris was carried off to the east leaving a path of shingles and such across our pasture and into the woods beyond. The darn thing also stole the car cover off my Alpine! We were fortunate that the funnel did not actually touch the ground or there would have been much more damage.

Your storm and hail was on the news here in the northeast. They say everything is bigger in Texas and the size of that hail was proof. I saw where windshields were smashed and cars all dented up.
It's a good thing your Winchesters were not snatched up and taken away because I hear Griff has this huge funnel over his place that gets them all.----6

The general track of storms in this area is north and east... Both crs & RKrodle are in that general direction... so the likelihood is that they'll get mine!Sixgun wrote:...I hear Griff has this huge funnel over his place that gets them all.----6

Griff,
I knew you would see my post. Just trying to put a little "light" on just another depressing action of nature.
We sure have had our share of headaches this winter with 17 snow storms. Most folks around here are broke from paying the heating bills, except the rednecks, like me, who heat with wood.---6

Re: Spring Time/Tornado Time in Texas - UPDATED PIX
I was out at 86er, RKrodle, CRS's hunting lease yesterday filling feeders and changing batteries (I made a deal with 86er to do that in exchange for hog hunting) and there was a lot of damage over in that area. It didn't look as if the tornado was plowing the ground as one did in Moore, OK last year, but there was a lot of damage. Several mobile homes were destroyed, one large residence had a major portion of the roof removed, a bunch of trees were down, and it all looked as if it had gone 10 rounds with an angry Vitaly Klitchkow.

Piller,
What damage did you see on our lease? Once down in Comanche County a tornado destroyed an elevated box blind of mine.
Also, the battery and feeder mechanism on the feeder at my two person box blind are both new as of March and should need no maintenance. Feeder may be empty, because it has been running.

At the lease, there were a few trees down, and RKrodles elevated stand had the canvas cover completely shredded. No structural damage to anything that I could tell. The feeder at the 2 person box blind did need filled up. One of the connectors had slipped off the battery and the display was not showing. When reconnected, it came on and I set it to the same times as the other feeders. I think it may have been shaken loose by the storm.
