Sticky cases = what pressure level?

Post by getitdone1 »

What kind of pressure (or specific loads) does it take to make the cases hard to extract with my Browning 1886 SRC? I have some pretty hot loads and no hint of cases sticking--AND don't want any !

Talk'in 300--350 and 400 gr bullets here.

I have tested the 45-70 to pressure levels that way exceed what should be put in any lever gun and never did I have a sticky case. Sticky cases are a very poor (read unsafe) method for judging pressures in guns that do not have an operational pressure range that meet or exceed the pressure that it takes to plasticize the case material (i.e. 65,000psi).

I believe your shoulder will be stuck before a case. You can load any of Paco's velocities with appropriate powders and never stick a case. I've had a 450 over 1900fps without any sign of sticking.
Kind regards,

Sounds like maybe I could load my Browning 1886 SRC to 2000 fps with 400 gr bullet and gun would keep on go'in forever.

My shoulder WOULD NOT !

And, ain't gonna do it.

I'm guessing (in few weeks I'll know for sure) my "hot" loads are in the 1700 fps ball park. Enough for me! A pad--which will never happen with this gun--would make a big difference. May eventually drop down to the old black powder 13-1400 fps level and stay there. There now with some loads using Accurate 5744 powder. This load probably gives me better penetration with soft bullets (Remington-Speer) than the "hot" load mentioned above.
