My New Way to Practice Shooting
With the warmer weather finally here, but still snow up well past my ankles I have been putting in quite a bit of Range time with the Lever Guns. Wanting something a bit different, and remembering KirKD, and others doing some offhand shooting this winter I decided to try something a bit different. I have a large Sandpit of maybe 2 acres near my land with heavy timber all around it. I decided to hang Clay Birds taped to strings throughout this 2 acre Pit. Worked out quite well as long as I left the strings long enough that my shots would end up hitting the sand walls. No camera this weekend, but I will bring it next time. Hopefully the snow will be gone in a couple weeks. I thought it would be easy nailing those clay birds at 50 yards, and it is from a bench, standing offhand is a different story. Most of the time with the bullet hitting just behind the bird It seems as if It broke, but didn't. I can smash them frequently at 50 yards, but have to concentrate heavily with my open sighted 30-30's, and 32 Specials to do so. I am in love with the new Williams FP sights I put on the 30-30's. Cant wait to Hunt with them next fall! Hopefully by summer I can venture back to 75, and maybe 100 yards to Break some. I will post some pictures on my next attempt. I managed to go through all 100 Rounds I had with the 4 rifles, now back to the loading bench.

If you have the luxury of a 'sandpit' with good backstops on three sides or more, try taking a dozen plastic 1-gallon jugs and mark some on front and back with a large 'O' and some with a large 'X' - one person trots a loop around the place, tossing the jugs into the brush at random.
The shooter (who didn't witness the tossing) gets a timed lap around the same loop, with instructions to shoot ALL the 'O' targets, but ONLY the 'O' targets - hitting an 'X' counts -2 points vs an 'O' +1; hitting an 'O' inside the circle of the 'O' counts +2.
Score the number of points divided by the time, or a similar calculation to your taste.
A cheap, fun, way to practice practical self-defense/rabbit hunting skills, and no two courses will be the same.
Masking tape can cover the holes if you are using small bore guns, and the targets can thus get multiple uses.
