OK, all you experts,

Post by jnyork »

I have two older rifles that I shoot quite a bit and were shot quite a bit before I got them. In both, there is some whiteish deposit or something in the grooves of the rifleing. It aint lead. They wont budge regardless of what I do, JB wont touch 'em, same for Flitz, same for Sweets, etc. What is this, is it some sort of corrosion or what? Thanks

jnyork,

I believe it is a corrosion of some sort, or at least some form of chemical reaction between the bullet metal and the barrel steel. I've seen this on 30 cal rifles I've bought used that have been fired, cleaned and put away for a long time.

The only way I've gotten rid of it is to scrub the bore with a tight fitting bronze brush saturated with Hoppes and then turning the gun muzzle down and let it soak over night.

I've never had it interfere with the accuracy of my rifles, but I don't like it either.

It sounds like someone used bore cleaner and didn't clean the bore. Maybe some kind of solvent reacting to left over copper residue.

I've seen that one time because I used, improperly used, an ammonia based copper fouling cleaner. Using one of the foaming cleaners removed it.

Hobie, I've seen it too. Only the ammonia based cleaner was Windex. It was used on a old Milsurp(an original Lee-Enfield) that had only been fired with corrosive ammo with cordite propellent. After using modern smokeless a few times and cleaning it out with that "blue magic" stuff, it started to look normal.

Does it affect the accuracy? Brasso is a remarkable bore cleaner. It's an old Marine trick.

Sweets 7.62 did that to an old Mosin I once had. Shooters Choice removed it.
