Up in "Members Skills Showcase" you see where I built a Volcanic Rifle from Aircraft Aluminum.
I have built this Rifle again, this time I used Manganease Bronze, and Titianium.
If you compare closely, you will see I am a little closet to exact scale time.
The Titianium carbine (21" Barrel) is finished, I should have the Bronze Rifle (25" Barrel) finished within the next 2 weeks.
Same cartridge, - my famous little (40 Volcanic)

They are fully functional, and I do shoot them.
The rifle will push a 40 Caliber, 140 grain bullet out the muzzle at 925 FPS.
I have an 8" Pistol that does 890 FPS.

It a custom Design, (something new), based on the 40 S+W cartridge. I head space on the mouth, as all automatics do.
The over all length is .812. It can not be any longer and still shuffle and shuck through that tiny Volcanic Action.
I make these cases myself from said Cartridge.
My favorite load is 3.5 grains of "Power Pistol", behind a 140 grain Flat Nose Bullet. This load preforms equally well from both the Rifle and Pistol.
A problem arose in the 1873 Winchester, where the stack of cartridges in the magazine, all came slamming back against the rearmost cartridge, nestled in the cartridge elevator !
This cartridge was now, not as long as he used to be !
No problem except his Brother imediately in front of him was now sticking back in the elevator with him ! this locked up the Action, not allowing the elevator to rise, with the ready to be shot round.
You will notice the 44 WCF (44-40) had this cannelure also, that is the reason, (prevent the bullet from being shoved back in the case)
I have the same problem, even worse, as my Rifle will hold 25 rounds !
I see no reason to carry my Rifle fully loaded, so I only put 10 Rounds in at the most.
That heavy chamfer on the rim was supposed to aid in the extractor hooking over the rim, but turned out, not to be needed.

Ok, I have seen that same cannelure on cases elsewhere, I want to say on heavy 45-70 loads to prevent recoil setback as you've described. I believe a dulled tubing cutter was used?
I assume this cartridge is based on a more modern case so you can run some higher pressures, and possibly because the original cartridge was a rimfire or something similar? I could Google it, but this conversation is more interesting.
I did notice the chamfer in the extractor groove and assumed it was to aid the extractor.
