Rest in peace, Watson

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Took my Brittany in this morning with respiratory difficulties. Thought he would get an antihistamine or something and all would be well. X-ray revealed an enlarged heart and a mass in his thorax that was pressing on his airway. Vet said the kindest thing would be to put him down. It was fast and painless -- for my Watson. He was 11 1/2. I got him not long after I was divorced from my first wife, and I can honestly say his companionship saved my life. Our other two dogs are very mopey today. I think they know something is terribly wrong.
Guys, hug 'em if ya got 'em -- for me.

I've had to do the same thing a couple of times. It's not easy. My sympathy to you. Sorry to hear it.

I know it's a tough time, Bill. I've had to do that final act of love several times, and it's never easy even though it is right. Get another puppy soon! My current lab is asleep on my foot as I write this. Each dog finds a special place in your family and in your heart! Best wishes. Victor

Yes, the other dogs know.

So sorry to hear this news, hope this helps...

Old No7

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I am on the board of directors of the local watering hole, it is owned by a co-operative.
One day sitting in there, a person walked in; and his dog snuck in, I know the dog, he came and sat by me.
The owner apologized and started to remove the dog, I said leave him......... I would rather sit with him, than 90 % of the people that went in there.

So sorry to hear this.

It's been a year and two days since I had to have my boxer mix Abbey put down.
Not a day goes by that i don't think of her, she was 15 and her kidneys were failing, but it still hurts.

Going to give my dogs a big hug right now.

It's a little easier this morning, but I miss seeing his easy lope ahead of me when I walk the 100 yards down to get the paper. Brittanies, with their long legs and short bodies, seem to just float over the ground. My other two dogs are still in serious mope mode.

Sorry for your loss, why such great companions have such short lives is a mystery to me. I hope your other dogs get over it too.

Bill, it's been said that the reason dogs have such a short life span is because they give so much to us. You have my sincere condolences on the loss of your loved companion. I believe strongly that a God of love would not deny us an opportunity to see them again when we cross that great divide. Until then, be consoled in knowing that Watson loved you as much as you loved him.

Very sorry for your loss. Lost one last year and know how you feel. A new pup helps but never takes the place.

Thanks again, friends. It helps to keep busy, so I'll be cooking today for my nephew and his college buddies passing through on the way to spring break in San Diego.
Also got out my dog breed book. I'm kind of liking the Vizsla.
I think I will have a stone engraved and put it in a spot where Watson always found an interesting scent. I named after Doctor Watson in the Sherlock Holmes series. "Come Watson, the game is afoot!" Holmes would say.
