A couple of new Marlin rimfire levers

Post by jdad »

I'm a sucker for a GREAT deal, on rimfires. The Model '97 dates to early 1906 and the Model 39 is an "HS" prefix that had a silver bead sight (I replaced it with a Lyman combo), so that put it around 1935-38. The bore is only fair on the 1897, but excellent on the 39.

Just got my first 39 a couple weeks ago. Been having a blast with it.

I wish they had kept that older style forearm. That was perfect. While I don't mind the fat forearms, I like the older version better.

Nice guns! :D

I think the stem is too tall, on the spare. It would probably be perfect for a centerfire, but the 2 CF rifles I have are taken care of.

Jdad,

THAT IS WHAT I NEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aren't you still trying to pick a favorite out for small bore lever action silhouette????? I will be VERY interested in what you end up with.

I'm in the same process now. I bought (for my 3 yr old boy of course) a brand new Golden 39AS and thanks to mm93 a very nice 1955 vintage 39A and have been working with both guns to see which is most conducive for the matches that start in May.

So far it sure looks like I'm leaning toward the brand new one. I notice that there is considerable barrel taper in the 1955 vintage one and the new one with the heavier barrel seems to hold a little steadier. The older one sure shoots fine though and as you know this is a LONG process, using different sights etc............

I JUST LOVE BOTH OF THOSE MARLINS IN THE PICTURES!!!!!!!!! One of these days I'll get an original 39 like yours. I adore that S pistol grip and octagon barrel.

WHICH ONE DO YOU LIKE BEST SO FAR???????????

Geoff,

Come down to the Oregon Arms Collectors show on the 30th and you can see that I don't really have a favorite 22 lever, just a lot of them. Vall will probably have 4 tables of Marlin's on display also.

I have a dedicated 1947 39A for silhouette. I've done a few sight tweaks, but have not touched the action. I don't practice between matches anymore because I'm a little burned out, so I just shoot for fun, but still score in the low 30's most of the time. Since I stopped practicing, my Hunter class scores have been in the high AAA's. :?: I'm getting a lot more enjoyment out of matches since I decided they were just a "game" and I'm supposed to have fun, not strive to be match winner.

I know this isn't a lever, but we just started M1 Carbine silhouette matches using the pistol caliber targets. Issued sights and no slings.

Now those are beautiful. I love the old squared off lever loops.

That pistol gripped one is one I want BAD.
...and I don't think he even knows it...Walks around with a half-assed grin...If he feels fear, he don't show it. Just rides into hell and back again.

Jdad,

How do you ever find a good gun to buy down there when old mm93 is running around buying all the good ones?????????

That would be super fun to shoot the pistol cartridge course with M1 Carbines. What is a decent score??? Man with issue sights and no sling I bet I would be hard pressed to score 20 out of 40.

Well an original 39 is a dream of mine. I'm really going to try to come to you guy's August show. mm93 said that'd be a good one if I can only fit one in. I'm what, about 9 hrs away at least. It'll be quite a trip.

Put a smaller aperature in the 1955 Marlin 39A and geez that really helps me out. It came with a Williams receiver sight and I'm experimenting with that for now.

You all take care down there!

Geoff,
You can book a room cheap right at the Holiday Inn and it's probably cheaper to fly down than drive, with the price of gas, but you would still have to ship whatever you buy home. It's really a great show.

You'd be surprised how well Korean War vets can shoot an M1 carbine. I just watch.

jdad,
I see the topic for this month's show is "Favorite maker"! Guess we'll finally have a topic that we can't go wrong with our displays!
I'm headed to the Reno gun show the 27th, but will be back Saturday to get ready or Sunday's show. See you there!
