Muzzle Blueing

Post by Swampman »

I buy old Marlins all the time and the one thing I notice is that no matter how clean the gun is, the blueing on the muzzle crown will be gone. Does the muzzle blast take it off? Sometimes I touch it up with cold blue. Do you think it hurts the value of the gun to touch up small areas of blueing? Most of mine are shooters and not collectors items.

The really old RIFLES were never blued. The dont have a radius type crown like is pretty universal today either.
Carbines & more modern rifles are blued & radius crowned.
I think muzzke blueing wear is robably due to several factors. Muzzleblast, cleaning wear & just the exposed nature of the muzzle. By cleaning wear I mean removing the lead, lube & powder fouling buildup around the muzzle.
I dont sweat it much but if you do a nice job touch up blueing the muzzle crown, I dont think will hurt value.
