Because the monsoon season seems to have hit south cetral PA, I was forced indoors to complete part of the Winter Challenge 1. To get out and shoot. I accomplished this today with my son. First, as much as I love shooting, this is the first time my son and I have shot pistols together in over 10 years. I recently in my down sizing gave him a mod 10 with a four inch barrel. And said I wanted to take him to the range to get him familiar with it.
We traveled to the indoor range I belong to in Glen Rock Pa, with a bag full of pistols and another with ammo.
We took my Sig 220 .45, the model 10 in .38 sp, my 637 in 38+p, my 617 in .22lr, my Rohrbaugh in 9mm, and two freeom arms, .22lr and .45 lc.
We started with the .38 and after safety instruction and some shooting tips on sight alignment and trigger control, Ryan started burning ammo, loading five and self correcting his hitch in his giddy up on the empty chamber. By the end of half a box, he had his groups to three inches at 7 yards and was very happy with himself. I was very proud of his willingness to listen to help and he did a wonderful job at his first real shooting.
We moved to the sig and I gave a bit of instruction on the semi-auto action and set him to it. He again was shooting very well very quickly. I shot some groups too, putting a clip into a cloverleaf at 7 yards to about 2 inches.
Ryan loved it and I think I know what Santa is going to bring him!!!
We moved down to the 317 and the high vis sights were very nice against the targets. 8 shots stay within the two inch bull, but a bit low. It has adjustable sights but Ryan got bored with the light recoil and wanted more.
Out came my carry .38 and he was definately impressed with the felt recoil. Strings went to about 4-5 inch groups. He decided he wanted to shoot the .45 somemore and went through 2 boxes of ammo before shifting
The rohrbaugh was a bit disappointing in functioning. I had failure to feeds, failure to fires in the first several clips. I put 100 rounds through it and 5 problems. Accuracy was fine for the type of gun, about 30 rounds in 4 inches at 7 yards. Not bad considering the lack of good sights. I will have to get it more reliable before it replaces the .38 for daily carry.
We shot the Freedom Arms .22, with its 4 1/2 barrel. WOW what a nice pistol!!!. I shot mixed ammo 1 inch groups on five targets. Gonna really enjoy ringing it out.
We also had a Springfield M6 survival rifle there. We only shot the .22 barrel but I was very impressed with the accuracy the reer peep allows. The first three shots I coldn't find on the paper. Turns out, they were going into a .45 hole about 1/2 inch below dead center. I picked a fresh target spot and the next 10 shots continued in fine accuracy.
We ran out of time before shooting the 45lc. My son kept a target with his smallest 6 shot group he shot with the mod 10.
It was a great time and a great day spent with my son and new firearms.
