Side Match Preparation & other activities

Post by Griff »

It's a little late, but, I committed to running a long range side match for our CAS club this weekend. Kinda wonder what you guys think:

Would you be willing to shoot something along the lines of:

3 guns; pistol caliber lever, rifle caliber lever, and .40+ Buffalo single shot.

Got four of my steel sillywet targets, 3 buffaloes (different sizes) and a running bear. And that bear is a BEAR to hit. While it's large, visually its a 3'x2', actual target area is only about 16"x10". Will add some of the club's targets to make an even 5 per gun. Still trying to decide if I wanna allow double taps for 10 rounds, or do a sweep, near to far. Yardages will run from 50 to 100 for the pistol guns, 75 to 200 for the rifle levers, and 150 to about 350 for the buff guns. Most hits with fastest time as a tie breaker...

For your $5 donation to the club: prizes to those that shoot all three guns, a pound of BL-C2 for the winner, a can of Clean Shot for 2nd, and a 50 round ammo case for 3rd. I'm the winner, as we're a not-for-profit and I can deduct the cost of the prizes! I think! 8)

Maybe I'll get someone to take a few pics. I'm looking forward to it. I'm not sure I'm going to shoot, the weather will decide. The wife already told me that if I get a relapse, she'll kill me! Even loaded up some loads for the Sharps. 90grs of Goex Cartridge under a 350gr pill.

The rest of the day was a waste, have to buy a new farm tractor battery, and I, of course, have the most rare battery requirement! From a low of $134 to a high of $227, for a battery with only 665 CCAs! Then, to top that off, the other day after workin' fence line, I left the p/u in the drive; the wife moved it for me that evening as she went to the store. You know what? You know how water seeks the lowest place... apparently the wife thought that was a good place to park. It then rained all day on Thursday, then snowed Thursday nite/Friday morning. But, not enough to freeze. This may come as a surprise, but... a 1/2 p/u with 2WD CANNOT pull out a 4WD 1-ton dually with a 16' foot flat bed when the 1-ton has itself sunk in gumbo-mud up to the axles!  So now I need some good clean fill in the front yard!

Yup, I surley would love to be there and shoot all three guns. I would use my Browning 92 44mag for the pistol caliber, either my Browning 95 in 30-06 or my Browning 86 SRC in the rifle class, and my Browning 78 single shot in the Buffalo class.

Can you tell I like Brownings? Of course I could switch to Winchesters, and use my 94 Angle eject .357mag, then switch to a 30/30 or 348win for the rifle class, but I am at a lose for the singleshot and I would still be stuck with the B78 :)

Wish I could be there, but I can't. Do you live down around Clarksville, Arkansas?

Sounds like it would be a hoot Griff...I'd go with my 50/70 Roller Musket, Sav 99 300 (no scope) & finally the Win 73 SRC 44 WCF..

Griff,
We were screwing around, after a silhouette match, and put the big bore chickens out at 200m.

That is a true challenge....offhand, with iron sights.

Most of our matches are "bacon & egg" matches. The top finishers get a pound of bacon and a dozen eggs. Match winner also gets a big block of cheese.

When I first started shooting matches down on the border, there were more Mexican shooters than there were gringo shooters; and those matches were bacon & egg matches as well.
A good time was had by one & all, those were simpler times.

Well... I did shoot the match and the side match. Work going on the ranch made the max range about 200yds. Couldn't get buy ONE round out of ten to chamber in my Sharps. The ONE time I used the expander die, I find out it's too BIG! If I just resize then load the bullet, with finese and care, 100% fit. Today is day 2, hopefully with a better result!

Although in the main match I did win my category! Though, how that happened I don't know. Ahhh, I love the smell of BP!

hmm, that gets me thinking we could have a shooting match at the summer leverguns safari and the 1rst annual leverguns P-Dog shoot. I like your idea. pretty kewl.
