Getting the hang of this Sharps Shooting
Put in some more time at the range with the Sharps this morning. Had 6 more loads to try out, and took the time to set up the Chrony since it was actually above freezing today. Some say they have good luck shooting black powder cartridge rifles with unsized cases and finger seated bullets. Mine doesn't like that at all, velocity was low and erratic and accuracy just wasn't there. I was also surprised at the very small difference increases in powder charge made, though it did affect accuracy a good bit. 62 gr. averaged 1084 fps, while 68 gr. was 1138 fps. That's only a 54 fps gain with 6 grains of powder.
65 gr. of 2F in a fully sized case with no crimp did the best today with the 480 gr. Saeco bullet.
I clean the barrel after every five shot group to keep it fair between the different loads. The first shot from the clean bore is easy to pick out.
It seemed to help a lot to blacken the front silver sight with a sharpy, but it still had a little glare when the sun peeked out of the clouds. I will find something to make it more of a flat black.
I can't wait to get a good tang sight on this thing, and see what it can really do.

Re: Getting the hang of this Sharps Shooting
Yea, I was pretty sure of that also.TedH wrote:I think he meant what is the sight in your picture Griff. I'd like to know too?
The sight is actually a Shiloh Sharps sight. But they don't offer it anymore. It was their standard globe sight. It's installed on my mdl 94 target rifle. The base is cut down to fit into a standard 3/8" dovetail and the top half of the "ball" on the post is filed off flat. Since that rifle is only used with a tang sight, it's a great mate to the rear.
But... it is very much like this one from C. Sharps Arms.

Ted you need to get that tang sight. You'll do fine if you can make it to the Midwest BPCR Championship at Alliance in May.

Re: Getting the hang of this Sharps Shooting
Are you using a blow tube? If not, give it a try. Need not be fancy, a piece of plastic hose that slips into the chamber will work. The ones with a cartridge case on the end are to prevent the chamber from condensing moisture and causing rust or poor obturation. Use the blow tube and quickly mop out the chamber if that is a concern.
A blow tube used with a couple breaths after each shot to keep fouling soft can and will tighten those groups even more.

Re: Getting the hang of this Sharps Shooting
A can of sight black will take the glare off of that front sight no problem.

Re: Getting the hang of this Sharps Shooting
Yeah Griff that's the type I want to go along with a tang sight, as soon as funds allow.
Chuck I haven't used a blow tube yet, but I'm going to pick up a hose and barb fitting today and make one. I don't know if I would see any improvement yet, I think these groups are about the best I can do with these sights. Frankly, I surprised myself with these groups.

Ted most folks are really surprised by how well those barrel sights will shoot to 500 yds and beyond.
Re: Getting the hang of this Sharps Shooting
Ted, that first shot, was the vel up on the clean barrel or down?
Nice groups, 50yds?

Re: Getting the hang of this Sharps Shooting
Ted, if those groups were at 100 yards, you, sir, are on to something!
As to front sights, You can also go with the affordable Lyman globe front with interchangeable inserts. I've put that sight on a number of rifles with fine result.

Re: Getting the hang of this Sharps Shooting
These groups were just 50 yards. I'm going to print up an easier to see target and move back to 100 yards now that I have settled on a load. Stopped by Home Depot this morning after church and picked up some clear tubing and a 3/8 barb fitting to make a blow tube.
Nath, the extreme spread between all shots was never more than 10-15 fps so I can't say the first shot was always faster.

Hmmm, I was wondering why the first is so far away! I wonder if after cleaning a bullet lubed patch down the barrel would bring it in some!
Nothing wrong with 50yds, you try aiming at that rabbit's head in a briar patch at 50yds n' say "just".

I have used the smoke from a candle flame to blacken my sights. It's really flat.
