That's a cool find, I'm glad the police knew what is was and saved it from destruction.
I remember back in the 60s in England, someone handed in a Colt Paterson to be scrapped but it too was recognised as a valuable antique.

So.... what's the story on the other two guns on the table...???
I wonder if they "shredded" them, or if they went home to be a Christmas-present to one of the anti-gun cop's kids...

Re: Police Gun buyback suprise.
That would be too hard to get away with. I'm sure it's happened but cops are like everyone else. They have co-workers that like them and some that don't. Same backstabbing for promotions and assignments as other professions. They'd get caught and fired. Plus, believe it or not, there are some honest cops! It would be stupid to risk a career, pension and jail time for any gun but I'm sure some knucklehead has.AJMD429 wrote:So.... what's the story on the other two guns on the table...???

I had to escort two truckloads of confiscated guns for destruction. They're melted into rebar . They're mostly from crimes where the suspect used it in a felony. Some were taken for safekeeping and never reclaimed. Lots of them are family turning them in for destruction when a spouse dies and insist they be destroyed. Those are painful. I've seen an actual full auto Thompson, lots of old levers, classic bolt rifles, a John Wayne commemorative with gold inlays and literally tons of others. Most are junk but not all. I've begged my admin to sell them but the "public" would crucify the PD if one was used in a crime and traced back to a PD auction. They just don't want the hassle. It's silly, I know, but .....it's California.
Last week an elderly gentleman brought me an semi-auto AK47 he bought twenty years ago for an investment. He wanted to know if it was legal. He said he bought it new. I sent him home with it and said I'd research it and call him back. Turns out he bought it legally but didn't register it as an "assault rifle" in 2000 so it would have been a felony if he kept it. I gave him several scenarios of what some people would do and what was legal. I talked an old lady out of turning in a 1st gen colt SAA for destructionn that was in unbelievable condition. Believe me, its tempting when she said, "just keep it." I really can't wait to retire and get out of here.
Back to th O.P. , I sure am happy they let her sell it but I hate those buy back programs. The only good thing is I think someone here took a bunch of junk in, got cash and bought another gun.

I have been wondering as to whether I could set up my own little gun buy-back program...

That happened in Cleveland about a month ago. Some guys set up a table about a block west of the PD and offered better prices than the $100 Walmart cards. The media was all up in arms but the police said there was
nothing illegal about what they were doing. They got a big thumbs up from most people.
