info please: 12 ga round ball loads

Post by Grizz »

Since I'm migrating to musketry with a norinco pumper, I'd like to simplify my life even more. I have a #1 buck mold. If I can get the correct round ball mold I can feed the pump musket pretty cheap: case of clays or whatever, dump the shot into the pot and reassemble with hard cast balls. I know this has been done, I'm wondering if anyone on this board has hands on experience.

What size round bullet would exactly fit in a shot cup of a 2-3/4 and 3" hull, replacing the shot that had been in there for a jiffy reload. What would that ball weigh?
I could see using two or three like Dixie does, or buck and ball if the weights work out.

thanks in Advance

I haven't but I'd be interested to hear from others too. I have a buddy that's going to loan me a .690" round ball mold.

My 690 balls fit most plas wads, choke crimps the petals off!

Soft lead balls like to colapse into a cylinder shape!

Herco was my powder of choice.

Grizz,
NEI www.neihandtools.com has anything you want or they can make it. I have a 16 ga. rb mould but I've never tried it. Cast 'em dead soft.---------Sixgun

Why not use the lee Key slug or the Lyman slug instead? I'm thinking real hard of getting me a electric furnace and the Lee 1oz slug mold. I plan on loading for buckshot as well, what powder and wads are you using? At the moment I'm thinking about going with Blue Dot at the moment, but if there is a better powder for the purpose I'm all ears.

Sixgun,

thanks for that link. I plan to hard cast them, just like my 45/70 slugs.

336A,

that lee slug and all of the hollow base soft ones come apart in ballistic gel. not so good if I imagine I might need to break down a charging bear.. . hard cast round ball will definitely out-penetrate the lee key slug. you can see lots of ballistic gel shots with that kind of slug on utube.

I guess I can buy a bag of .690 and start 'spermintin'.

I can also try putting my 525gr into sabots. I'm trying to oversimplify. Actually if I just cast half a ton and use it for ballast that'll last past me.

My idea is to use the components of the loaded shotshells, which run about two bits, and swapping the lead for a two and a quarter bit slug round.

So far I have not found a source that can supply all the components of the loaded shells for anywhere near cost parity. Would love to learn otherwise. But really, can you obtain all of the components in a shotshell and for less than 25c?

I do understand you being hesitant with the Lee slug but it isn't totally hollow based like a commercial Foster slug is. It does have that partition of lead in it, but then again I've not seen any gel test conducted with it either. On the other hand there is the Lyman 525gr slug which looks like an oversized air rifle pellet. No telling how that one would perform bt I bet it would leave one heck of a mark.

Hey, on a serious note, as you know, they are great people to deal with. Joel has done a lot of work for me and its all 100% good and accurate. The old man, who used to run the show was "the man", but his turn-around time was only for people with a long life expectancy. :D -------------Sixgun

Grizz, knowing your penchant for penetration, a RB is not what you want, is it? A weight-forward application will fly better, and do more damage. See: main battle gun on current Army Tank

well, I think I've seen tests where hard cast round balls significantly out-penetrate soft lead round balls.

I think the significant issue is the lack of flat meplat and the probability that the ball will deflect some inside.
OTOH there were LOTS of soldiers in the war of naked aggression that got double penetrated, and
ground up bones. If I ever get to harvest a bison I think I'll try the Grizz HardBall. Do some realistic forensics
before rigor. I just need a volunteer for the freezer.

Hmmmmmm, Grizz HardBall out

Jeff Tanner in England makes a dandy round ball mould of any diameter you specify for under $50 delivered ! Ive ordered a couple and get them in under two weeks from time of placing order !

When playing I just use a load meant for same wieght of shot as long as my shotgun projectile is same or slightly under given load . So Far been lucky with that :?

If you want to drop them in a shot cup, they should be about .690".

.690

Exactly 1oz of lead/alloy.

It's what you use for PRB in a 12ga muzzlestuffer.

OK thanks on the .690 guys, I'm gonna buy some and start getting happy about old school, really old school ballistics.

Ji

Are those for cylinder bore? I thought those were full bore for rifled barrels. And are they components? Some of James' stuff is loaded and some is the projectiles. And I get confused when there's more than one choice to decide between :!:

How are you keeping? Family and all well I hope?
