N.E. Earthquake This Evening ! !

Post by Pete44ru »

I felt a slight shudder in my house about 15mins ago, and a window pane or two rattled for a sec - my wife didn't even notice - and I said wazzat ?

The newsies just came on that there's been a 4.5 earthquake in Lake Arrowhead, Maine (NW of Biddeford) @ 7:12PM - an easy 150-200 miles away from my home.

Good down here, in Southern New England AFAIK - IDK about Victor (in NH) or our Maine members, though.

More of a tremor? I guess things aren't really built with earthquakes in mind there, so even the small ones can cause some damage? I know there was a tremor in TN when I was there once. I woke up just prior to it like I usually do, but most people slept through it or didn't notice it, but it still caused cracks in buildings.

No big deal - just call USGS nest time prior to testing so they know what they are seeing.

Believe me when I say that we HEARD it first and then FELT it -- as we're < 10 miles from its epicenter.

The USGS had this "Did you feel it?" map posted on their website...
Earthquake Map.jpg
Gee, I guess you all know where I live now!!!

Gotta go "see" my avatar -- my wife's still shaking over it...

And all the family from around New England has already called asking "If we're OK?" or wondering "Did the dog react before you felt it?" and all I can say is there was no time for her to react, as we heard it first and then we felt it.

I never thought that an earthquake would make such a BIG BOOM, but that's what it was here.

We definitely felt it here in Central Maine! Probably 5-10
seconds of good shaking.

I thought maybe there was a problem with the furnace, then
thought perhaps a moose was rubbing up against the deck
posts, (yes, that's happened before!), but seeing no
evidence of either of those two occurrences, was forced
to conclude, "earthquake!"

My wife confirmed it moments later on the internet.

It was a Navy co-pilot landing a Southwest 737 at Portland. The last thing his captain heard was "watch this".

I ate too much for supper last night (moose steaks) thinking it was indigestion until my youngest daughter ran up to me said we had an earthquake.

Was in NE this last week. Flew out of Boston, on Monday. Durn, I missed it. Wife is happy we did.

Imagine what it was like for me and my wife when the 7.2 hit in 1989. We were in the upper floor of the house, built on alluvial SF Bay soil, and only 60 miles, from the epicenter. You don't forget one that big or all the 5.0+ aftershocks.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

My mother called up and asked if we felt the earthquake. I replied that my wife and I were just watching the tv and did not notice anything unusual. She said that they felt the house shake and the cat went crazy. It is odd that we live about ten miles apart as the crow flies but we didn't feel a thing. I believe part of it is that their home is next to the Char Fault Line which runs from Old Saybrook Connecticut to Newburyport Massachusetts and then out into the Atlantic Ocean.
