My son's wilderness trek

Post by KirkD »

Daniel Durston, one of our sons, took part in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Open and came in first. Am I a proud father? Well, okay ..... I'll admit it. I am. He covered 106 miles on foot in 66.5 hours, with a fair amount of it on an injured leg. If you would like to read his account, here it is http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin ... d_id=64764

Kirk: An old geezer who loves the smell of freshly turned earth, old cedar rail fences, wood smoke, a crackling fireplace on a snowy evening, pristine wilderness lakes, the scent of
cedars and a magnificent Whitetail buck framed in the semi-buckhorn sights of a 120-year old Winchester.

Tell him I said congratulations. Now he has me thinking about hiking in my locale. I saw where he said he had bear spray and I know you all aren't allowed handguns except in certain circumstances up there, but I think at least a pistol caliber carbine (in my case a 92 Winchester in 44 Mag) would have been mighty comforting without adding too much weight.

Kirk, I know you are proud of your son. That was a trip to be remembered.

Glad you fellows enjoyed the report. Looks like those years of bringing him wilderness canoeing and camping and portaging have paid off.

I just got around to reading it finally - he made it look so easy, but I'm sure if I drug my half-century old carcass on that trek it would have killed me.

I'd have died in beautiful country, though...

Awesome report and an awesome trek. If I lived out that way, I'd love to give that a try. By the time I finally move out West I'll probably be way too old for that type of a trek.
