Grilled is better than steamed is better than boiled. IMHO.

Spend a little extra on the hotdog itself. It will always taste better. I like Nathans and Hebrew National. We don't eat a lot of them so when we do I like to enjoy it. On a related subject, I'm a big fan of Johsonville brats too.

When cooking, /never/ pierce the skin with a fork, especially when grilling. Nothing like a dry brat or hotdog. Ditto for getting them too hot and letting them split.

That's limit of my cooking expertise.

I bought a hot dog from the vendor at the range in August and it was the first I've had in years. I like them either way.

What do you put ON it?

mustard
onions
relish

Meat - even tubular mystery meat - requires Fire to be properly prepared.

What goes on it is regional, but I like Kraut & Brown mustard, Chicago Style, & Chili & Cheese

Ketchup on a hotdog is sacrilege. I put spicy brown mustard, chopped raw onions, and sauer kraut.

Nuked for speed. Otherwise, grilled, but always w/spicy brown mustard, cheese; and when not overly rushed, dill relish and onions.

you guys might think me a touch odd, but when i cook a dog or brat (it happens -- brats happened yesterday in fact ) -- i go plain and dry and straight from the grill on either a piece of sourdough, or a wheat bun--- sourdough is the only white bread that equals wheat and the like in nutritional content due to the active cultures in the mix

But if i eat a brat or a dog, its a special treat, -------- i boil the brats in a little beer first, but the dogs i fire straight on the grill ------ occasionally i'll have 'em with a bit of cheese,

---- Ball Park, Oscar Meyer, Nathans -- whatever --- they all taste pretty good to me :D

---- I have to eat 25 straight turkey sandwiches and egg white omellettes , no condiments, as repentance after an afternoon like that though

how about the commercial ones that are speared lengthwise with a long hot skewer and slowly cooked from the inside out?

Like I said I am fine with boiled but if they are on the grill, the ones the husband at the grill sets aside as burnt are fine for me (blackened until they split, the mustard collects in there better).

In the days before microwaves, when working nights I used to put a couple in the electric coffeepot and boil them, the people who drank coffee in the morning had no idea.

Boiled with catsup and chopped onions.

Good posting!!

I am an old Chicago boy so I like my hot dog the Chicago way; an all beef dog steamed on a poppy seed bun, mustard, relish, onions, tomato, slice of pickle, sport peppers and a dash of celery salt.
If your in a real Chicago hotdog stand you can just say "2 dogs, dragged through the garden the and a large rootbeer."

Growing up, I always had them boiled on white bread as well. So, my normal way is boiled (until they split!), with ketchup, relish and onions. However, I also like them grilled, with cheese, chili and onions. (Of course, there's always the cut up in a pan of baked beans approach as well.) Now if we are talking brats or Italian sausage, that's different. I like spicy brown mustard on brats, with sauerkraut and onions. Italian sausage I prefer on a roll with mayo (yes, mayo), onions and peppers. LOL...it seems the only common theme is onions.

Having stated the preferences above, I will also say I will eat any combination of condiments on any type of dog or sausage, grilled or boiled/steamed, depending upon mood and availability.

Top of the line would be a Boar's head skinless wiener, cooked on the grill till crispy. Brown mustard, with finely chopped onions and a warm bun.

I've noticed lately though that good buns are hard to find.

Whole! :D

Someone mentioned Boar's Head and we think they make superior products in general, but for dogs we also really love a brand that we get at Whole Foods called Nature's Rancher. Outstanding dogs and not filled with junk.

I grill them on my George Foreman electric grill. It is faster than anything except the microwave and they come out good.

I like chili, onions, yellow mustard. Sometimes cheese, slaw, relish (sweet or hot), kraut on occassion. All these do not work together though.

No ketchup! I thought only children did that and we all know they don't know what's good. They think chicken nuggets are fine dining.

Other holidays are good too... But... to me the very best gourmet dog to be found in hot dogdom is served on the 4th of July... it is always the cheapest dog money can buy... burnt to perfection by pan or grill... served on the cheapest doey bun that money can buy... and always floated on gobs (here's the big splurge) of Heinz sweet pickle relish.... That's the kind of dog I imprinted on as a kid & by Gar, tradition says that's the way we're gonna always have'em... and if you stick to strict summer pic-nic procedure... you wait an hour before you go swimmin’....

Grilled/boilied if convenient, nuked otherwise.

Great replies fellas. I had overlooked frying, although there is a small joint in an even smaller Oregon town that features deep-fried dogs. They're crunchy and pretty good.
We did a taste test last night, with grilled Nathan's and the new Oscar Meyer Chicago recipe dogs(no preservatives).
I got serious enough that I actually baked the buns from scratch, letting them rise twice. EXCELLENT BUNS!
Then we assembled diced Walla Walla sweet onions, diced fresh garden 'maters, dill pickle, mustard, sweet relish and sauerkraut. Did the dogs on the Weber kettle. Very, very good stuff!

Here's that recipe for the buns. Careful, you will never want a store-bought styrobun again.

We buy real good beefdogs and different sausages. hotdogs grilled, or boiled. Sausages grilled. We use a George Forman for grilling alot instead of lighting the outside grill. Alot of chopped onion, kraut, catsup or mustard. And of course the great American CHILI DOG.

I asked the grillmeister who does his thing at our Regional Matches how he fixes his. He said that he boils the brats in beer and onions for45 minutes at home. Then at the matches he grills them on a gas grill. Betcha can't eat just one. The toppings include grated onion, cheese, pickles, relish, catsup, yellow mustard, and dijon mustard.

I place a cast iron skillet on the grill and add some chopped onion and a couple of chopped jalepenos and some butter. While the onions and peppers are saute'n, I grilll the hot dogs 'til they split open. Then put the weenees in the skillet with the onion&jalapenos and pour a can of hotdog chili sauce over them and heat 'til the chili starts to bubble. Lightly mayonaise some hot dog buns and grill them for a minute or two. A shot of yellow mustard on a bun, then a weenee and some chile. Good eatin' right there.

Beef franks, Nathans are real good, on the grill 'till they split. Sweet relish, mustard, chopped onions, ketchup and a touch of celery salt works good, better yet is Morse's 'kraut and a touch of mustard.
