First home made spur project

Well Rangeryder got me going with the picture of the old spur so thought i`d give it a go.
This is what we got done today, they will be case color when done.

Now that is right neat. They look right well done from here. What tools are you using? I don't ride, but I know somebody who does if you decide to sell some.

Hey thanks pards, i cut the part that curves around the boot with the plazy then used the side grinder to smooth them up.
Bent them around a piece of pipe , turned the heads of 5/16 bolts down for the strap pins and welded them in holes from the inside.
Not sure about the rowels yet and the leg that holds them but they will be big.
Going to tie into those logs in the morning then will finish these up.
Don`t know if i`ll make any more at this point.

The black spur in the first picture is a factory spur i bought in MT.

Thanks guys, i`m back to work on them now, after break that is.

I plan on heating them with a torch so they look like case harden colors, we`ll see how it goes.
Working on the rowels now, got the arms done.

Real good looking using working spurs. They are about like a pair I bought in Mexico years ago.

Those scream for jingle-bob's!

That's the proper way to mount them, each bob with its own ring, held apart by the "arch". So many makers just use a single ring, but the sound ain't quite "right" to me.

I didn`t leave a post sticking out to attach them too on these but i like the way those are mounted.

I love 'em! Very elegant style and you got the arch in the rowel arm just right. I wear spurs when CAS shooting and really like the looks of these. The jingle-bobs would be a nice touch for future projects.

There ya go... you've written the perfect country & western... er spur!

And, no... those aren't mine... just pulled a pic off the internet to show how they are mounted. Mine are plain browned steel, but they have a place for a concho, I just ain't added the Mexican Pesos yet. Made by Higginbotham back in 1990... well made and sturdy... the jingle bobs have been ripped off a couple of times, but... hey... they're what they should be!

I even wore mine when patrolling on horseback in the Sheriff's Office. You'd be surprised how easy it is to 'neak up on folks, even when wearin' jingle-bobs!

Now get busy and finish t'other one!

Oh yeah, the buckle goes on the outside of your foot! (There, that otter stir up the pot a little)!

Well now you fellows are making me think I need some of those spurs. Most of the time I don't need them, but from time to time I get a lazy slacker of a horse that you practically have to light a stick of dynamite under its tail to get it to move faster than a walk. A slap across the side with the reins makes it move, but it seems I'd have a lot more control with spurs.

It's why I don't wear those little under the foot straps. Also, since I'm in & outta the p/u, I CAN drive when I'm wearin' mine. A "spur shelf" on the heel keeps 'em from draggin' the ground.

I've seen and met gorses with such an aversion to spurs that they'll "pitch 'n buck" at the slightest touch. When nothin' else seems to work, spurs can still be too much. Just a friendly warnin'. My old mare (29 when she passed last summer), perked up when she heard me walkin' out to the barn wearing jingle bobs. She'd be the first tto the barn, if I wasn't... she'd be last. Gads I miss her.

I shoot CAS but my persona as cooks helper, camp helper on the trail drive and name `Chuck Wagon Chuck` don`t call for spurs.
Not needed to ride the chuck wagon.

First rate job! I would have made the rowels blunt pointed but more agressive. Don't need Mexican gut hooks, but the hoss needs to know who is the boss.

Gosh Griff, don't get that buckle inside or outside controversy going here too. That's sorta ongoing at the SASS site. Comes down to you can find old pictures of cowboys wearin' 'em both ways. I remember two of my older cousins who worked for a big ranch, wearing spurs on their high top brogans. No, not packers, brogans.

Great Job, the only thing I would add is sign them in some way. You should be proud of doing such a nice job and signing them lets people in the future know who made them. "Pitchy" stamped on the inside or under the button would be nice. RR7.
