It's a wonder they ever sold any of those .444 rifles with a crazy price like $124.

Do you have a number where I could order one of those if I can save that much up?

Dang! I must be gettin' old. Although I was just a kid, I remember when those guns came out as all the "old heads" were talkin' 'bout 'em.-------------Sixgun

The thing is, I can easier afford a $500 rifle now than I could a $124 rifle back then.

I bought one of those .444's, at Woolco (F.W.Woolworth & Co) Sporting Goods Dept for $109 "on sale".

IIRC, it wasn't long, before I took a hacksaw to the barrel, cutting it back to 16" & rasped down the monte carlo comb.

I ended up making my first blackpowder percussion pistol from the 8 inches of barrel I had lopped off.

Here's the 1st ad introducing the .35 Remington in the Marlin 336 in 1950 :

Wish I had kept my first 444, but I am making do with the one I have now.

BINGO! A number of folks seem to remember how "supposedly" economical things were in the 1950's-60's, but forget about the low wages....

1957 when I was 16 years old I paid $65 for my model 94 brand new. Still have it. I was getting $1.00 a hour working my butt off summers for green giant in a canning factory at the time. My ride was a 1946 chev that I also paid $65s for. Now its more than that every time I gas up! Wish I would have kept the chev. Here I am at about that age. I belive I shot the deer with my shotgun though as we lived in a shotgun slug only county in wisconsin.

I used to read every gun mag I could from my wages on the neighbours farm. The week I turned 18 and legal to buy a 444 I bought one. It is rare when a young man's impulse even remotely appears to be common sense. It turned out I bought the perfect Canadian hunting rifle. It still shoots straighter than I do four decades and more later!

That is what I was thinking. They are cheaper now.

Ah yes...my "go to" rifle, the .444 MArlin. My wife bought mine for me 25 years ago. I don't know what she payed, bought it from a friend who bought it new and never used it. I did chop the barrel to 20 inches and add a scout scope...the one in the pics on the South African Safari post....and it shoots like a house on fire..

I still use the original brass from the rounds she got when she bought the gun, and it has taken a few animals over the years, including my warthog in Africa.

The older Marlins, pre-safety, are just awesome guns that shoot forever..
