Pitchy,

That looks like an old "Police" scanner, from the mid-1970s. Yours is an 8-channel, or "8-crystal" style. It may have all 8 crystals in it, or some of the channels could be empty. There was no tuning knob on those. You would buy the crystal for whichever frequency you wanted to monitor, and install them in the scanner. You could get crystals for police, fire, airport, or whatever else the receiver is capable of picking up. Then, you select either "manual" & press the channel that you want to listen to, or "scan" & be surprised when the action happens. ...hours of joy!

Pitchy,

You are welcome. Unfortunately, I cannot use your scanner. I can see someone buying it for set dressing for a movie, though!

Looks like a old Bearcat 210.I had one of them when I was a lot younger. Uses crystals for the desired frequency so not cost effective now. Its just a receiver. Most were for the 150 to 170 Mhz range. Not much to here there now a days.
