guess what i had in my hands today

Post by rossim92 »

walked in my buddies gun shop and saw a 1893 savage rolling block in 303 caliber laying on the counter. It comes with a tang sight, and has a some kind oF bubble level on the barrel, not sure what that is for. Anybody know? has a brass ring for front sight. looked inside barrel and looked shiny and can see the grooves. Somebody offered him 1600.00 for it , but has not showed up to lay claim to it..i'm just posting for him, and thought you guys might like to have a shot at it.I posted this rifle in the c lassifieds if u are interested. ( want top keep hobie happy :D ) this ffl dealer is a straight up and down guy, I buy all my guns from him if I can. thanks for looking. I KNOW A FEW OF U GUYS ARE PARTIAL TO SAVAGE RIFLES. If i had the money, I would buy it. I'm not in this for money or compensation,Just wanted to give you guys a headsup.

First of all, way cool. The bubble level is used to make sure you aren't canting the rifle to one side or the other. It's just another aid to make sure the rifle is held the same for every shot. You can still get sights with a level and I have seen them a couple of times on repro Sharps rifles. Never seen an original though. As I said earlier, way cool.

A Savage rolling block? I must admit I have never heard of one and a search didn't bring up anything.

.303 Savage (which is my guess) or .303 Brit?

Hmm… someone should tell him.

"The Savage Arms Corporation was organized in 1894 to manufacture a hammerless repeating hi-power rifle invented by Arther Savage of Utica New York..."

Stevens made falling falling block rifles… Stevens was bought by Savage in 1920.
How you'd get a .303 in them though I couldn't say.
Slow is just slow.

That's a Savage 99 leveraction. It is NOT a falling block, tilting block or rolling block but I bet you are sitting there thinking you're a block head. Don't. I've seen and heard worse from many who are supposed to be knowledgeable.
