What is your favorite diameter?
I really like .284 calibers. I own a 7mm-08, 275 Rigby and 7mm Rem Mag and I've used a 280 Rem, 284 Win, 7X64, 7mm Weatherby Mag and . From pint size to huge these have it covered, however they are a little big for the smallest and a little small for the biggest. The most useful bullet weight only vary by 50 grains and the velocity range varies about 600 fps. So while I really like the .284's they're not my favorite.
An easy vote would be for the .308 since there are dozens of cartridges using this diameter. Again, they would cover small to huge. There is quite a bit more variation in bullet weights and velocity range available, but this diameter just doesn't hold any special attraction to me personally. I have a .308 Win, 30 WCF and 300 Savage and I could put .308 bullets in my 303 Brit if they were just the right one's. This one's not my favorite either.
The .458's have taken a huge amount of game for me in 45-70, 45-90, 458 Win Mag and 450 NE. Even slow 250's are a bit much on the small stuff but most of them can take the big stuff if its done right. A 405 grain can do 1300 fps or 2100 fps and be very effective anyway in between. I need and rely on this diameter for some specific tasks but they are not my favorite.
There are a bunch of others that I use and appreciate but none could replace the above diameters.
My favorite is the .358. From a paltry 35 Remington or 35 Win with 180 grain bullets at 2000 fps to 358 WSM Wildcat and 358 Norma Mag they can take any game. The useful bullet weight range is from 180 grain to 310 grain and the velocity varies by over 750 fps. The 35 Remington has mild recoil, many rifle actions and even handguns to chose from and is extremely efficient on deer and bear with close range elk in it's upper limits. The 35 Whelen comes in pump, semi auto, bolt and single shot actions and can be a true 300 yard elk rifle with 250 grainers. It can be loaded down for deer and antelope and up to a 310 grain at 2200 fps for buffalo, eland and other biggies. A 358 WSM Wildcat can send a 250 grain at 2750 fps making it a long range capable cartridge for just about anything and with a 275 grain or 295 grain it is a heavy duty close range thumper. I currently have 3 different actions in 35 Rem and a 35 Whelen.

Re: What is your favorite diameter?
No favorite, but I shoot more .22 LR than anything else. For deer, elk, bear I have .284, 30wcf, '06, .44mag (hand and shoulder versions), .405, .444, .54 RB, and .459......all perfectly good depending on the range expected. My experience is so little, that I think they are all about equally good, once again, taking range into consideration.

Re: What is your favorite diameter?
.284 (rifle)
What I hunt is many times vastly different than what you need sometimes Joe.
Having some guns with power(more than I need)such as a .416 Weatherby(that I have yet found anything to beat it as a long range killer)
with the 350 grain Barnes X(at 400 yards it is still going 2200fps w/3750ft lbs while only dropping 20" sighted in at 200yards)
But---It kicks like holly heck and just ruins most of the animal it hits.
The 45-70(have several)great caliber and honestly my next to top spot.
But considering EVERY animal I have ever shot at with a 7MM Rem Mag has dropped like being struck by lightning, and having the gun provide such mild recoil I have no other choice than that caliber(in a rifle)
However--------
My very favorite diameter of ANYTHING/ANY WEAPON--------is .706
This is the bore dia of several 20" Ithaca Deerslayer Supremes I own.
Why-------This gun will take anything I hunt.
With the improvement of current shot shells and that specialized barrel they made that gun can take(Ducks/Turkey/varied Small Game/Upland Birds/Boar/Coyotes/Deer/Bear/Elk/and on and on. It shoots skeet wonderfully and is a fast/short/deadly home protection weapon.
With it Dura coated and its being bottom eject its impervious to weather and can also slam fire if ever needed.
So--------------.706 yep,thats my Fav

Re: What is your favorite diameter?
.360" because that has proven to be a good diameter for cast bullets in 90% of the centerfire guns I own in ten or more bullet molds. From 100 grain to 250 grain. 38 Special, 357 Mag, 360 DW, 358 Win.......
Kind regards,

Though I size my bullets differently for the different cases, my fav is .429. .44 Russian, .44 Special, .44 mag. .444 Marlin.

I imagine that I'm in a long line behind 86er.
I've come to appreciate the capabilities of the .35x class of bullets. From the .357 Magnum, to .356 and .358Win, and then the .35 Whelen. Every single cartridge is a proven and hard hitting game-getter. I'll use other firearms appropriate to specific hunts, but when the job needs doin', I've settled on the .356Win as my go-to gun.

Re: What is your favorite diameter?
I've always been a fan of the quarter bore and more lately of the 6.5mm. In both cases because they're so versatile, but in the case of the 6.5mm especially so.
In the case of the 6.5mm it has nothing to do to the 6.5mm craze (if one could call it that) which has gripped the U.S., but rather because I've gained familiarity with 6.5mm Krags and Mausers over the last decade and what's not to like about those? A friend came to visit with an Alexander Arms AR-15 in 6.5mm Grendel and my love of the caliber was sealed. From 95gr varmint grenades all the way up to the 160gr scandanavian moose killers, the caliber just seems a joy in every respect and especially so in 6.5mm Norwegian, which is way better than 6.5mm Swedish...of course.
Ya, you betcha,

In rifles; 30 (ish) caliber, 30 Carbine, 30-30, 30-06, 303, 7.65, 32....
In handguns; 44, with 45 and 38 tied for second.

Re: What is your favorite diameter?
How about a .35? .356wcf in a 94 and a .357 in a handgun.
Re: What is your favorite diameter?
Obviously, mine is .321
I have no experience with the 35's but do not doubt any of its benefits, and still thinking seriously about a 356 conversion in a Marlin. (would buy one except are a bit scarce and pricey, can convert one for almost the same and get longer barrel, etc)
35 Whelen intrigues me. I am not familiar with the 358 WSM Wildcat but will be researching that too!
The .33 also has my interest. The 338Marlin Express I am tinkering with now may be the ticket, the tale will be if more bullets for it become available. (210 NP maybe)
338 Federal has my interest. Same reasons as the Marlin Express, and if Browning would wake up and chamber the BLR for it, I would be in line to buy one (if I could make the gun heavy enough) Even the 33 Win has my interest. Thought about converting a marlin to do that!
My heart goes out to 8mm though. Not sure why. Would like a BLR in 8x57. What would the 338 ME do with necked down 8mm? (or a 444 or 356 down to 8mm?)
I like the 33's and the 8mm, for the heavier bullets, I like heavy for caliber bullets anyway for big game. (say compare 308 with 180gr to the 8x57 with a 200 grain)

Yeah, the .33's are interesting, especially the .338 Marlin. If the .356 becomes totally obsolete, and the .338 lasts, it may get rechambered in my Winchester Bigbore.Marlin32 wrote:Obviously, mine is .321

I've taken the most large game with the .30 cals but my favorite has to be the .458 though the .358s are gaining.
I've only taken one animal with my .35s but the accuracy especially when shooting 200+ yds has been amazing!
Small game has been either .22lr or .222 Rem. Love that Sako!!

Handgun or rifle, I like things starting with a 4. But I like loud and boomers, so take my position with a grain of salt.
Like Blaine, I probably shoot more .22 than anything else. Those things are just fun. You can shoot all day with nary a sore shoulder the next day.

Re: What is your favorite diameter?
If I could 'tweak' existing cartridges (i.e. make the .45 Colt and .45-70 use the same caliber), and get bullet-makers to make heavy bullets in neglected calibers (heavier bullets are available in .338 & .416 caliber, than in .358 & .430, respectively... ), I'd just get:
.204 for a rimfire (would be a cool round!), & centerfire varmint round (.204 Ruger).
.358 for a handgun/levergun carbine round (.357 Mag) & rifle (.35 Rem or .35 Whelen) round
.500 for a handgun/levergun carbine round (.50 AE?) & rifle round (.500 S&W or .50 Beowulf)
If I had to stick with existing cartridges and their quirky actual diameters, it would be trickier:
The 'core' would be
I'd also consider one of the wildcat .45-70's necked to .452 so I could have my ".45's" without having two separate calibers ( ), as well.

Due to many historical reasons for me, the 30 calibers are my favorite. Primarily the 30-06, but nothing wrong with a 30-30 or the others.

I had a tough time trying to decide between 44 and 45. I can't say "all the way" but I do REALLY LIKE 45ACP and 45AR but I also really do enjoy shooting 44 Mag, 44 Special and my newfound interest 44 Colt.

Re: What is your favorite diameter?
Joe,
I have often thought about that and I have come to the conclusion that the 40 calibers combine the best of each on either side. My favorite rifle calibers are the 40-65 and the 40-82 while my favorite handgun calibers are the 38-40 and the 10 mm. Still contollable and damagable without the excessive recoil of the 45 calibers.
While I have no experience with the "big 40's" I hear the 404 Jeffery, 416 Rigby, .416 Rem. or Whby. have excellent sectional density to "punch through".------------Sixgun

While I have no experience with the "big 40's" I hear the 404 Jeffery, 416 Rigby, .416 Rem. or Whby. have excellent sectional density to "punch through".------------Sixgun

Re: What is your favorite diameter?
If I have time to reload, I love my 35 calibers, with the 350 Remington mag being my favorite.
And I love the 25-06, but my most used calibers are in the number 30. And while there are many many choices of bullets to reload, which could make a good argument for the 30 cal. My main reason is that of lazyness and convience, and handyness, because some of my favorite leveractions are in 30cal. The beloved model 94 winchester in pre-64 is one reason, and the other is my old steel framed Browning BLR in .308 win.
It fun to play around with all kinds of calibers, even wildcats, and while my custom handloads for my .350 Mag will flatten game, better then anything I have ever used, and can also be downloaded for light loads with pistol bullets, it's still not as handly as the BLR, and after shooting all kinds of calibers, I have came to the conclusion that the 180gr .308 Slivertip will do about as good a job and any thing else, and it's just easier. And I always have my .30-06, and 30/30's for other uses. So really, I don't need anything else, but the 30cal, except when we start talking pistols.
When it comes to handguns, my favorite is 45, or 44 cal, however, for a lot of cheap centerfire shooting it might hard to beat cast .38's.
When we start talking Muzzleloaders, then it's 54 cal in a rifle and .69 in a smooth bore.

I don't own one (yet) but I love the 9.3mm especially the 9.3x74R in a SxS double.

Re: What is your favorite diameter?
Most often used would be .22, and I must admit, it is one of my favorites. I just love plinking for hours on end, shooting thousands of rounds, and not feeling like I need to take out a small loan to do so.
For handguns, I'm partial to ones starting with ".45", as in .45 Colt for my SAA's and .45 ACP for my pistols.
For rifles, my favorites are all .30 calibers, though the .45's again make a strong showing!

Too bad they don't make high-ballistic-coefficient bullets for that caliber; many types of .338's are available that are heavier than what you can get in .35.Lastmohecken wrote:If I have time to reload, I love my 35 calibers, with the 350 Remington mag being my favorite.

My favorite (and most often fired) is the .313" as I love the old .32-20 cal. It's not one I've ever hunted with, but I never go to the range without one of my .32-20's going along.

Re: What is your favorite diameter?
Seem to load the heck out of the .44 cal, could be 44 WCF, or 44MAG, or 444...but, do shoot alot of .4605" HB cast out my Trapdoors, .312" out the 7.62X54, .303, and 7.7 seems to be right in there too. Almost forgot about the .3215/324 casts for the 32/8MM, just threw about 500 of them down range out a variety of rifles from a .32Spec made in '40 to a 88 Commission made in '89(1889), with a couple of 98k's in there for good measure. Then there is probably th sweetest caliber..the 6.5 Swede, which can do all the others can without any fuss.

Re: What is your favorite diameter?
I'd have to say 36-24-36 or anything alng those lines.
Re: What is your favorite diameter?
Make mine .357" (+ or - .010") .
Then I'm not sure.
Maybe .308" (+ or minus .010")
Then .22" or .410"?

Re: What is your favorite diameter?
If its one caliber for both rifle and pistol, then I would have to say 452 for me. I can do 45 Colt, 454 Casull or 460 S&W in many different bullet weights which makes it very versatile.
However, I have to say I'm mighty impressed with the 375 H&H AI in my rifle. With handloading you can put a big lead bullet in it and plink (I'm told by a reliable source but that's not really my thing) or you can load it like mine until is resembles a ICBM! Its just does anything well with the right bullet. Here it is next to a 454 Casull dummy round. -Tutt

Well if it is one caliber for both pistol and rifle 357 it is. If not 308 for rifle 429 for pistol!
