New member with a question!
Hello all!
First every post!
I have a Uberti 1873 Winchester chambered in .357magnum with a 24" Octaganol Barrel. I have started reloading for it and are trying to work out my ballistics (shoot at 50m and 100m) but I can't find the twist rate of the Uberti barrel anywhere!
Does any body know the twist rate for these rifles at all please?
Thanks
Andy

WELCOME!
I don't know the answer to your question, but it's easy to figure out for yourself. Run a tight patch on a jag on a rod that spins free of the handle into the bore. The rod should be marked on one side up near the handle and again near the jag. Start watching your side mark as soon as the jag mark passes into the muzzle. Mark the rod at the muzzle when the side mark makes one revolution, remove the rod and measure the distance between the jag mark and the last mark and you have your answer.

Re: New member with a question!
Now that you know the twist rate could you enlighten me as to WHY you needed to know? Other than curiosity there really isn't a reason I can think of to worry about it as the standard twist rates have worked with every applicable bullet I know of. If you're doing something really interesting/unusual, I'd like to hear about it.

Andy,
Welcome to the forum.
Yep, we like pics even if we've seen the same kind of rifle a hundred times. Every one takes their own pics and we like it.
We even like the pics from the guys in OZ. Even if they are upside down on the screen ....... just kidding

Re: New member with a question!
Now, I'm getting a little confused 1/18.75 or 1/12?
Okay the Cimarron site came up, the 357 is 1/18.75. My 38-40 is listed as 1/36 and they show two for the 44, one with an 18" and one with a 56" twist. What's up with that and they don't make a distinction between barrel lengths. The bore shows the same size. Seems rather odd that the 38-40 has a rate of 1/36. Seems way to slow.

Re: New member with a question!
Well, Benelli owns Uberti and their tech told me on the phone today that all the 357 1873s are 1:12". I said, 'wow, that's fast.' She said 'Yep, I hear that alot.'kimwcook wrote:Now, I'm getting a little confused 1/18.75 or 1/12?

Re: New member with a question!
Faster is better for the longer bullets... less so for BP... which is why the .38-40 might be that 1:36. And at the speeds of pistol calibers, even from a rifle... especially a toggle-link, ain't gonna show a significant impact on stability!
Edited to add: There may also be changes throughout Uberti's production of this rifle in this caliber. I'll get ambitious here tomorrow (why not procrastinate?) and measure to see if there's a difference between my 1986 .45 Colt 1873 and the 2008 .45 colt 1860 Henry! May not say a thing about the .357 versions... but then again... there may have been changes when Benelli bought Uberti?

Re: New member with a question!
just a thought, if you are going to hunt with it, you might have good luck with the Barnes bullets as they are quite long - as long as the 180's I have. Yet they're only 140 grains which means they will go wicked fast.

Seems like the only definitive answer is to measure it as suggested above. The faster twists are pretty easy to measure in rifle barrels, at least to within 1/2" or so; telling if something is 1:56 vs. 1:48 calls for more precision, especially if you've got a 20" barrel or so, where you're talking the difference between the cleaning-rod turning 150 degrees, vs. 128 degrees. That's not easy to just 'eyeball' as you pull the rod through the barrel.
