not totally OT, BBQ Holsters?? pictures

Post by Chuck 100 yd »

Here is my latest pair of holsters. They will be numbers 6 and 7 for me and my first attempt at floral tooling and carving.
I can see how this can get in your blood. Very time consuming and therapeutic.

They are made from Will Ghormleys pattern for the HOG rig from
("3:10 to Yuma" )

Next comes the stain and then forming and sewing.

Another reason to buy more single actions! Need more leather! :?

I am testing a couple different dies now. Canyon Tan from Tandy and Fiebings Oil die in Saddle Tan. We will see how they do on scraps before coloring these.

It may just be a thing to keep me active when I retire in another year or so. For now I am so slow I don`t think I could make minimum wage and keep them competitive in price. We will see.

Not a floral pattern guy myself, but those sure are pretty.

Beautiful work!! I am going to start dabbling with making holsters to see if I'm any good at it. How long did it take you to get where you could do that?

I have made 5 holsters since I got interested in CAS back in the spring.
The first were like these.

the ones I posted for this thread are numbers 6 and 7 and are the first I ever carved. If you look here you will see how I learned. I think anyone who can work with tools and has some imagination can do it. Give it a try and have fun.

Hand stitching is just plain fun and after the first couple I find the carving and tooling to be a lot of fun too. Be prepared to spend some time.

Those are all nice. Thanks for the links, they will help a lot. If I can make my first ones half as good as your first three I will consider them a success.

OK now for the stupid question... how do you learn to do the stitching?

Rusty , Open Tandy`s web site
http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/home ... egory.aspx

Scroll down the the bottom of the page and click on leathercraft videos. Lots of help there.

The most help came from the leather group here.
http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php?board=57.0
Look in FAQ area under hand stitching.
It is very easy to do and lots of fun. I use the two needle method with 5 strand linen thread and #0 harness needles available from Tandy. A small stitching awl or drill the holes with a Dremel tool and 1/16 drill bit or better yet a #55 drill and reform the holes with your stitching awl to make the sewing easy. Wax the thread with Bees wax.
Have fun!
