MOVIES - True Grit Trailer

Post by deerwhacker444 »

Personally,...I think it looks interesting. Looks like lots of shooting. I also like the the "Dirty" feel of the characters and clothes. I'll reserve judgment till I've seen more....

Thanks for posting that. Still doesn't look like the Ft Smith/ McAlester area much :D

Coen brothers movies - I either love 'em or hate 'em - usually not much in between. "No Country for Old Men" is about the only one I can't make up my mind on.

So, I loved the original True Grit and can watch it over and over. I hope this is truly the Coen brothers version of the book and not the previous movie. At least it showed snow at the cabin like the book says there was.

I will eagerly await the movie so I can go and pass judgment :D

I'll watch it just to see what they did different than the Wayne version.

I'm very much looking forward to it! No Country for Old Men was disturbing to the point that I thought about that film for days afterwards. To me, that's one kind of good movie - makes you ponder it.

Looks...... "ok".

Great cast though.

The young lady playing Mattie doesn't seem to have that "spark" like the original......

Dunno....maybe I'm partial to the original.

Thanks, Tom

Well, it already looks messed up to me. Rooster is wearing his eye patch on the wrong eye. .>)

John Wayne tried to buy the movie rights from the author but lost out to Hall Wallis. When Duke called Wallis to complain he was offered the role of Cogburn. Wallis said only John Wayne could do justice to that part.

I guess we'll see if he was right come December.

+1

But I don't care what they do - they can't top the original...

Hope General Sterling Price,(Rooster`s Cat) is in it. I think the cat who played him deserved
a Nomination from the Academy!

I propose you fellers come to Richmond, Va and we'll see this picture show together! Wouldn't that be a hoot?

Looks like it might be a good one, but man, what a tall order taking on such a wonderful movie and cast as the original.

A couple comments;

Mattie Ross in the John Wayne version was played by then 22 year Kim Darby. She'd been in movies for a number of years by then.
The new versions Mattie Ross is actually only 14 years old. There's no similarity to them other than they are both female.

In the trailer for the new version, it looks like Rooster Cogburn uses two Walker Colts in the shoot out with Lucky Ned Pepper rather than the Colt SAA and Winchester that Wayne uses.

I've just checked my copy of the book and Rooster did use two Colts or two pistols in the shoot out.
I also read the ending and it's totally different than the movie. LeBeauf (sp) did not die and actually assisted the deputies in recovering Chaneys body. After that he returned to Texas and was not heard from again.

Now, there is no way we can do this, but I'd suggest we take these as two completely different movies. It might be more enjoyable that way.

Wow, I thought I was the only one who thought the Cat's role of Gen Sterling Price was overlooked by the academy.

Never much cared for the original. Seemed like too much "acting."

I don't think it's fair to compare the two. Different actors, different times.

I'll wait until I see it to decide whether it tells the story, either the same one, or a better one.

Looking forward to it, in any case.

My wife and I were discussing this movie yesterday and both of us agreed that Jeff Bridges was playing the part of John Wayne in the new movie rather than the part of Rooster Cogburn. In our minds you just cannot separate John Wayne and Rooster Cogburn, they are one and the same.

Damon's politics aside, he can surely only be a major improvement over Glen Campbell, and I even tolerated him 'cause I really liked the movie overall--and his musical contribution. Actually wish(ed?) they'd include him in that latter role again--at least orchestrated music of same...has become such an iconic score. We'll see, eh?

I expect this version to be a little bit darker. True Grit (v1) was supposed to make you feel good... the wrongs were righted, everyone gets a happy ending (except Glen Campbell who takes one for the team).

Daemon can act. I always like Campbell's music... but a card board cutout could have out done his acting in the original picture.

Brolin and Bridges politics dont bother me at all... as long as they are at work acting let em act. They are ENTERTAINERS -what they say should not affect any thinking people who hear them. Many of us swore an oath to protect the Right to voice an opinion... I may not agree but would defend your right to say it.

George Clooney - on the other hand............

I have the book, read it long ago, reread the ending the other day. I'm wondering how this new version will treat the end. How much will they follow the book, or how much will they deviate from it?

Should be quite interesting.

Been along time but I remember the book & Wayne movie following very closely. Some of the movie dialogue was right out of the book.

Most of the variation is at the end.

Waynes version, LeBeauf gets killed, the book he lives and goes home to Texas.

WV, Mattie Ross and Cogburn get together after he took Chaneys and LeBeaufs bodys back to TX for the rewards. Mattie still has her right arm but its in the sling.
Book: they never met again, and she lost the left arm due to the snake bite.

WV, he jumps a 4 rail fence with his new horse and rides off.
Book, he lives another 25 years then dies and Mattie Ross has him dug up and reburried in Dardenell.

That's most of it. There's a few more differences I'm sure. I've posted a few in my posts above.

Paper version Mattie never marries. No one will have her because of the loss of her arm.

Them was to tough times.

Just ordered a used paperback version from Amazon -$3.

Shall we start sending it on loan around the country among us?

2571,
I've had my paperback copy since 1969. I bought it through the high school book club. It ain't goin nowhere. But I think before I go see the never True Grit, I'm going re-read the book and then watch Wayne's version. Then I'll go see the new one.

Sounds like fun.

True Grit I may be the second best western movie of all time. Casablaca would be the first & Shane, would be #3.

Isnt the book an autobiography written by Matty Ross herself? I read this in '91, it is great. The book was already much darker than the movie, the fight at the end was rough, so was the snake bite ordeal.
