Winchester Super X ammo?

Post by rangerider7 »

I shoot Winchester Super X ammo hunting soft point in my 1925 Winchester 1892 SRC. Is it okay to shoot it in a modern Colt SAA?

This is .44-40 or .38-40? I don't think they still make the high-velocity stuff and it should be just fine.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Hobie, It is a new Colt SAA in 38-40. The ammo is Winchester Super X 180 gr soft point hunting ammo. I also have a New Service Colt Kings conversion in 44-40. The ammo comes in the silver box of 50 rounds.

I was always told that any factory ammo is designed to be used in any gun it was originally chambered for. The +P ammo or equal now available is an exception I know. And does it say on the box "for rifle use only". Keeping that in mind you probably could shoot any factory 32/20, 38/40 and 44/40 in a M. 73 Winchester with it's toggle link action and soft steel. I also think the lawyers at the ammo mfg's would be careful to see that this policy was in effect. I DO NOT recommend shooting modern loads in the 1873 though. That said I have built a couple of 1st gen Colt SAA's into 44 Spl. and 357 Mag. with no ill effects. And Colt did build 357's in the SAA. That caliber generates greater chamber pressures than the 32/20. The third gen Colts are stronger than the early 1st, and equal to the 2nd's. I have no experience with the Colt Cowboy. I'm sure others will chime in on this subject.
