Corn Thief Gets the Death Sentence - Levergun Hunt Today

Post by 86er »

There's been a weird white hog coming around and eating all my deer food. We first saw it on the game camera. It showed up a few times, disappeared for a month or two and then re-appeared with three piglets. Recently, it showed up alone and really started eating every bit of deer food in the night and again when the machine threw food in the morning. We were going to leave it alone as a mascot of sorts, but if there is no food when the deer show up they will lose interest quickly and go somewhere else. We need the deer pictures to manage our property the right way. So the Honey Creek - Black Cat Ranch committee met and decided to put out a warrant for the white hog. At first, I offered to arrange a posse. I advertised this hog in the classified section and elsewhere. Some people were interested in the Deputy position but nobody could make it anytime soon. On Saturday I had the white bandit at 20 yards but let it go in the hopes of saving it for the posse volunteer. Well no volunteer stepped forward, so me being the Sheriff of Honey Creek, had to track down the bandit single handedly. The camera showed the corn thief arriving before daylight and leaving after gathering all the loot. I strapped on the 45 and grabbed the levergun at 0500 and headed out to the ranch. As I rounded the corner in the trail in the early light I could see the bandit - caught red handed! Although the wind was against me I had washed all my clothes in scent free ATSKO wash and also used UV Killer and sprayed Dead Down Wind over all of me before setting out. I backed off and stuck earplugs in and re-approached. When I looked through the scope I couldn't see anything. I backed off again and used the lens cleaning cloth. A gust of wind pushed my fumes towards the white blob but it didn't react so my scent free preperation was working. I snuck up to 55 yards and put the post behind the left leg so the bullet would angle out through the right shoulder. Boom! It was still just dark enough to notice some flame coming from the muzzle. Whitey turned and ran down the trail I was on towards me. I couldnt see through the 4X scope. It was too much magnification for this close range moving target. 2 shots missed. As Whitey ran right past me not 3 feet away I just sort of looked along the barrel and point-shot. Whack - a chunk of skin tore off the back end. Whitey cut into the bushes and all was quiet. I waited about five minutes until the light came up enough to see the blood trail. I like the 35 Rem on hogs because the blood trail is always heavy and coming out both sides (so far on everything I shot with it). A short trail led to the now dead bandit. His corn stealing days are over! I was also surprised to find out that Whitey was actually the One Eared Bandit in disguise (note the right ear missing in the picture - not just the outer ear - there's no ear canal on that side). His mono-hearing and insatiable appetite for deer food were his demise. The 200 gr Rem Core-Lokt hit where I wanted it to but exited behind the shoulder instead of into it. The exit shows nickel sized expansion. The shot that hit the hip skimmed over the hip and tore a hand-sized piece of meat out. I cut the One Eared Bandit open just to make sure there was not bullet in him. The first shot had cut the lungs and the top of the heart. He weighed about 200 lbs. The deer can eat in peace now without fear of Whitey or the One Eared Bandit.

I am enjoying the 35 Rem because of blood trails like this

Looks like he's got a really short snout and short neck for any type of Yorkshire,..I bet there's some Pot Belly pig in those genes..? Had a friend who had one that went feral. It looked just like that but was black.

Good shooting anyhow...!

Sounds like you need to affix a bayonet for close encounters....!..

I'm feeling better about my recent 1951 Marlin 336 35 Remington buy.

Good show, Joe!
This should lower our deer corn bills too.

If you had used your 1886 .45-70, that first shot would have rolled that porker! :P

Of course, you know that, having killed more than 100 hogs with that cannon.

Good going Sheriff Joe. Tracking down that no good varmint for a face to face showdown was the noble thing to do. That rascal was a real ring tailed tooter of a pig to be stealing that food.

I'm still stuck on him missing an ear and ear canal. You sure he didn't start life near a nuclear reactor somewhere?

Now that you got the thief, you need to hang him (in a cooler for a couple of days)! Then bury him in some good barbecue sauce and let him cook for a while.
