45-70 primer help needed
I'm brand new to reloading the 45-70, and wonder if I got the right primers at the gunshow today. My reloading manual calles for Remington 9 1/2 large rifle primers. What I bought are Remington 9 1/2 M Magnum rifle primers. Are they the same? If not, will they work with out any pressure problems? I'll be loading 405 gr JSP bullets at mild speeds around 1400-1500 fps. I've got 1000 of these primers so I hope I can use them.

In all likelyhood with loads of that speed and range, you won't actually notice a difference. Either will work but it's a good idea to reduce a load 5-10% to account for ANY primer difference in ANY change from data. Only a cronograph and comparing the same load with a non-magnum primer will let you see it.
"People who object to weapons aren't abolishing violence, they're begging for rule by brute force, when the biggest, strongest animals among men were always automatically 'right.' Guns ended that, and social democracy is a hollow farce without an armed populace to make it work."

i dont know what powder or charge you are using but you shouldnt have any trouble at 1500 fps loads. i have alot of magnum primers on hand and use them with low velocity loads frequently with slow burning powders like h-4895.

I'm assuming you are using a MODERN 45-70 at those velocities!?
With that assumption, use them. And start with the lower charges and work up.

As always you gentlemen have been very helpful and understanding. I will be using IMR-3031. The book calls for 46 gr. so If I start at 41gr and work up slowly, I guess I'll be OK. The gun is a modern Marlin 1895, which is a joy to shoot. Thanks for the help. Zack
