Silhouette shooting - guidance?

Post by Triggernosis »

Can someone point me to somewhere that I can find some info. on the "silhouette" shooting that I keep seeing references to? Stuff such as: what is it? where do I shoot?, etc.

Thanks in advance.

I assume you are referring to metallic silhouette. Here are some links with information.

A number of folks on this site shoot Cowboy Lever Action Silhouette. It's a great time. Be sure to check out the forum on the Steelchickens site. It doesn't have the volume of traffic that this site does but there is some great information. As far as where to shoot, where are you located? This map link was created by someone on that site.

Good luck

Choose your poison, then look under the calendar at the NRA Programs site. Several ranges hold silhouette matches, from Haltom City, FW, Texarkana, Austin among others.

Here is kind of an overview:

The matches are fired in 5 target segments, 1 shot at each target, left to right. Shooters are given a 30 second preparation period to load their rifles with 5 rounds, then 2 minutes to fire at their bank of 5 targets from the offhand (standing) position.
If it is a 40 shot match: 10 targets are shot at each distance
If it is a 60 shot match: 15 targets are shot at each distance

Smallbore rifles can be any tubular feed rifle ….lever action, bolt action, pump or semi- auto
Pistol cartridge and Cowboy Rifle cartridge must be leveractions.

Sights: iron sights only.
Front sights: factory or globe sight (must have a post type insert)
Rear sights: factory /peep / tang
Sights must be made for the gun - no custom sights

Courses of fire:
- Smallbore (.22 rim fire (no magnums)
- Pistol cartridge
½ size steel targets - approx target sizes
chickens @ 40 meters – 2 ¾â€

w30wcf,
Do I understand that ALL firing is done standing, off-hand, unlike BPCRS?

Does the front sight rule mean that sights like Skinners, the Marbles Sourdough, and XS are not allowed?

If I can use a peep sight, I sure don't wanna be stuck with a bead front.

I met up w/ John at last year's Pa finals. Man what a BLAST! Can't wait to shoot another one.

Make sure you have easily adjustable sights. I shot it w/ standard rear buckhorn sights on my rifles. Would have done much better w/ tang sights or an adjustable receiver sight.

Griff,
As jnyork indicated, all of the shooting is done offhand or as some of us like to say "awful" hand :D . When there is time after a match at the range(s) where I shoot, we have a fun side match called either "duos banditos" or "tres banditos" depending on wether we can put 2 or 3 persons on a team.

Two teams shoot against each other the object is to see which team can clean their bank first. The shooting can get fast a furious! What fuunnn:D :D

Triggernosis,
Glad I could help. I'll post a few more pics of the closer animals in the next day or so.

jnyork,
17A is legal as long as the insert is a post or bead type. By chance have you shot at Atglen? That's Sixgun's home club.

JMiller,
As long as the front sight is a bead or a post and it is made for the gun, it's legal.

Jason,
Let's have more fun in '08! :D

Cool as heck...

I'm in GA and am wondering if there might be one near me, (not that I have a lot of extra time these days,).

Also, I bet they have pistol shoots, huh?
