OT Remmy 870 20g ??

Post by Nath »

Any one here know how heavy they are?

The express model with a 28" tube.

The Rem web did not say (not that I noticed).

Thanks.

They aren't all that heavy.

I seem to be using a shotgun more and more these days.

My Franchi Fast (a Bennelli really) is a joy to carry at just over 61/2lbs.

I like my Henry Monk for the same reasons but it does have a crack in the fore end and as I hunt varmints most the time I don't wish make it worse. Even whilst shooting pheasants this winter I scratched the stock!

At the end of the day I am just a varmint hunter and would be better served with a good ole workhorse of a gun (once fitted correctly).

I had a Franchi auto in 20g years ago and was amazed with the perfomance of the little shell even taking geese well!

I find myself wanting to hunt more and shoot less, does that make sense :? I mean I want to get closer in stead of spying out a long shot with a rifle, don't get me wrong thats cool and fun but nothing beats the buzz when you can see the whites of their eyes :) Gettin' old I guess.

Hope they are under 7lb :)

If you keep delving farther and farther into the specs they say a 28" 20 gauge weighs 6.5 pounds. I have gone to the 20 gauge because the 12 seems too powerful for small game and blasts critters too much if they are too close.

Mine has the 26" bbl and I just weighed it at 6 lbs, 8 oz on my electronic fish scale. It is the express version with the hardwood (non walnut) stock. It is light and handy and doesn't have the bulk of a 12 ga.

This is a great all around gun. I have shot duck, pheasant, chukar, quail, rabbit, trap and skeet with mine in mod choke and it has worked fine for all. I ran across a full and imp cyl. for a dollar each they were getting rid of at Wal Mart. The gun has the best handling and natural pointing for me of any shotgun I have used. You will love it I predict. Finish requires no care. I hunted all day with it in a cold mist and rain and just wiped it off with no problem. I do coat it with RIG every once in a while and wipe it off. I call it the world's greatest shotgun.

I have an old 870 wingmaster in 20 ga. It was my Dad's, 26" vent rib fixed mod choke. It has accounted for a pile of ruffed grouse, woodcock and rabbits. A joy to carry, looks nice with a deep blue finish and at the time was made on a smaller frame than now. if memory serves the present 20 ga 870 is made on the same receiver as the 12 ga. Just a smaller barrel but the barrel ring that fits on the mag is the same diameter as the 12 ga. It weighs in around 6lbs on my scale. Try one on for size I think you will like it.

I really don't think a person could go wrong with any 870. They all seem to go Bang every time you pull the trigger! I just picked up a N.I.B. Left Hand 12 gauge with the Matt finish, and the Laminated wood for 250.00 Even though I happen to own 4 shotguns already I couldn't pass it up. Now the difficult part will be to find a short left hand barrel to go with the 28" that came with the gun. Gives me something to do I guess. May take it Turkey Hunting this weekend.

I've never been a pump gun fan, but the 870 is a solid proven design. It's my favorite pump for sure.

Here is the 870 20 gauge in action. My oldest daughter with her first squirrel! Her gun is a youth with screw in chokes. It is mighty handy and not too short for big people really. She had some frustration trying to get a squirrel in the scope of a rifle but after we got the shotgun she told me "I can't miss with this shotgun!" She loves that gun. They are great for kids and I know one little boy who has killed squirrels, turkey, and a deer with his.

Here is an 870 LW that I restocked with a straight grip and a small forearm. I also installed a big head safety, cut the barrel to 21" and had screw in choke tubes installed. I weighs less than 6 lb. and is like packing a BB Gun.

Fun in the Quail cover. You can pack a lot of ammo for the weight of a few 12 ga. shells. :D
Getting the wrap around checkering straight was a trick but it came out great on the first try.

Chuck, on restocking to Straight grip, Is that all there is too it? Just change em out?

BTW my 20ga w/ 28" barrel is very pleasant to carry and shoot, quite impressed how it balances compard to a 12ga 870 I have.

.Dirty-.Thirty , That is all there is to it.... Yes!
No metal work like swapping stocks on a levergun. One could reshape a PG stock but you will find that the shape of the wrist don`t come out quite right. Better to start from scratch or buy an unfinished PG stock blank with a little extra wood to work with.
The forearm on that one is the original fat semi beaver tail stock that I fitted to a spindle and turned round in my metal lathe. It has the feel of an old gun with that slender grip up front. :D

For not much more you can get what I feel is a much better gun. The Browning BPS 20 ga.
http://www.browning.com/products/catalo ... ype_id=211 My son has the Remington Express and it seems to show rust befor you can wipe it off if out hunting in the rain. Now the Wing Master is a nice gun but I recomend staying away from the Express. Just my $.02

Very nice Chuck and good work there :D

I got the little Express, first shot was a bolting rabbit at 40 big steps, the dog was required.

Next two shots got a crow. Later the next two shots got another crow that must of been 50yds or so high up but did not kill it but Tia enjoyed the long retrieve.

I am impressed, must take the camera next time.
