OT - What to do around the Tahoe, Reno area.

Post by kimwcook »

My brother is getting married in a couple of weeks in Tahoe, CA. The wife (my wife, wiseakers) and I will be in the area about a week and a half. What suggestions do the esteemed members have in the way of what to see and do around that area. I want to definitely go to Carson City. What else?

Still snow and skiing to be done if you are into it. Gondola rides to the top of mountains provide great views for those that don't ski. You can hire a charter and fish for big mackinaw on Tahoe or Donner lake. Go for snow mobile rides, sleigh rides, ice skating, build a snowman. Gamble, see a show, eat well. Rent a boat and look at all the mansions and castles built along the lake. Play snow-golf with orange balls. May be a gunshow in Reno coming up, dunno for sure. There is a Cabelas at Boomtown. Reno pawn shops probably full of guns you might want. Huuuge bowling alley in Reno. You can take the Amtrak and be in San Francisco in half a day, great train ride through the snowy mountain passes, STay the night in San Fran or Sacramento is closer.

Tons to do. Be easier if I knew what you and your lady liked.

if you are so inclined, the nevada State RR Museum in CC is a must. You can also ride a restored portion of the famed Comstock railroad, the Virginia & Truckee, from Carson to Virginia City. VC is another destination, with rich mining history and places to see. Also, many casinos for gambling afficianados. Merely driving around the Lake is spectacular. :)

kimwcook,

Hook up with forum member Leverbob. He lives in or near Carson City. If it's worth doing he'll know about it.

Hey, it's been years since I've been there, but is the Pondorosa still open. Kinda neat to see in real life what we saw on TV.

The Poderosa closed some years ago. :(

There is one mansion that has tours available the Thunderbird mansion. Rather nice.

Thanks for all the replies. We're not looking for much physical activity, skiing, snowboarding, etc.. Just sites to see, historical places, interesting sites. I love the cowboy life, not so much the wife. She didn't grow up on a horse like I did. I wouldn't mind taking a leisurely RR ride though. She'd probably like that too.

Kim...PM me & we'll hook up in VC (Virginia City). If you like mexican, there is a super restaurant, The Del Rio on the south side of town that has the best enchiladas anywhere here ( & the best margiritas ). Love to meet a forum member.

Be forewarned, The V&T ride is $50.00 PER person. I think it is worth it, but haven't taken the ride yet...too busy finding work.

If gunstore's are on yor list of "to do's" in Reno I can recommend the following 5...

Gun Stores...(Good people in both stores!!!)(both on Keitzke Lane)

Mark Fore and Strike (ESPECIALLY helpful gun guys!!!)
Silver State Arms

Big Box Gun Stores...(for the selections and atmosphere)

Sportsman's Warehouse (Used to have better deals than Cabela's, but their prices are getting pretty high!)
Cabela's
Scheel's

There are others, but these are the ones to visit IMO!

Enjoy your trip!!!

Not a suggestion, but I'd go look for the family ranch from the 60's outside Reno.

If you are also interested in old cars, the Harrah's auto collection is nice. It's in downtown Reno. Just a shadow of what Bill Harrah had before his death, but still interesting.

What about Vikingsholm?

The website http://www.vikingsholm.org/tours.html says that they are only open from memorial day to the end of september.
