OT Farewell Babe

You weren't the best cow dog, but you were a darn good companion and friend for these past 15 years. Farewell for now, hopefully we'll meet again on the other side.

My condolences on the loss of your old friend.

Doc

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I'm so sorry for your loss. Most dogs are perfect people.

I like this tribute by George Vest:

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his DOG. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wing and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth an outcast into the cold, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard him against danger, and to fight against his enemies. When the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws and his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death.

Fellers you know sometimes you just got to sit and wonder.
Yesterday we found out that Carols tongue cancer is just stage 1 so one more surgery and we should be done with that. It hasn't went anywhere as yet.
Then Babe bids us farethewell,
Go out to do chores this morning and apparently the horses got to wrestling in their shed. Somebody kicked a piece of the tin clean off the side, and Bill managed to cut his left hind foot clear into the hoof from the top of the ankle, in two places.  So now I get to doctor a crippled horse for awhile, and I don't think he's going to be ridable for quite a while as deep as the cuts are.
If I could find some lime juice to go with this bottle of Mescal....... except I don't have time for that right now, got to go see where the replacement heifers all dissappeared to...... :|

Don,

My heartfelt condolences. The loss of a companion like Babe is something we can never get over...they stay in ours hearts forever. I hope you meet up with her again at the Rainbow bridge.

I've heard it said that dog's lives are so short, becuse they give so much to us throughout their lives. Know that your are in Babe's heart, as she is in yours.

Don I dont know why it is but for some reason spring is hard on dogs and horses. In the rocky's they hold tight against winter and go downhill in spring. Our canine friends are good for our soul they can teach compassion, loyalty and unconditional love we could all do well to listen. danny

Danny we didn't think Babe would make the winter, but last night when I found her not far from her favorite watch me thru the yard fence hole, when I came back in from checking cows, I heard a killdeer chirping, so spring is officially here now.

Don, I am sure sorry for your loss. What a beautiful dog Babe was! Like most here, I've been there before and will be there again. Right now, I have 4 "rescue" dogs and have to fight urges to rescue "just one more." Just remember, you gave Babe a long, happy and healthy life, and provided much joy to your friend, just as Babe did for you.

All the best,
John

When they've had a full life and its time, well then its a blessing.

My buddy Lance left us too early. I was out of town and couldn't be here to see him off and that was the hardest thing about it for me. He was just shy of 10 years old.

Our other, Button who is in her 14th year is laying just behind me right now. She's doing very well for her age and has helped to aleviate Lance's passing.

It is always hard to lose a good dog. Fifteen years is a long time. A big empty spot is left behind.

I have a great boxer, now, smartest dog I've ever owned. Two dogs ago was an Elkhound who lived to 19 - he used to fish with me, leap to catch the frisbee, and he threw firewood for fun - seriously. Never seen a dog that could jump like him. He could leap flat-footed over the side of the truck into the bed without touching the side. When he was 15, I bought an Akita to keep him up and moving, and she did. He also caught every animal that came through the yard and laid it at the back porch, a tradition the Akita kept up with the feral cats the neighbor feeds. (There is a wild rabbit that lives in the yard with the boxer now.)
The Akita was the prettiest dog I have ever owned, and aloof. But they don't age well, and she finally got mean. When she was 4-y-o and 90 lbs. she used to roll in the yard with my older daughter at half her weight and never a tear was shed. But at 12-y-o, when she snapped at my baby girl, I knew it was time to put her down. I was going to be so brave, but that last ride in the truck, and she was having so much fun, I balled like a baby.
