As I related in the "rusty old Marlin" thread, I went to a small gun show in Biscoe on Saturday, and traded a pistol for a very clean, 1970s Marlin 336 with a straight stock. It's not a 336 Texan, but it is the model that preceded it, with the same specs: straight stock and 20" microgrooved barrel. It's missing the front sight hood, which I don't need. (That must happen to a lot of 'em.) On the way home, I stopped at the Flintlock Rifle Range in UWharrie and ran a box of shells through it. Works well!
Can anyone tell me the manufacture date?
SN 230783XX
Does anyone know if it has the holes needed for a side mounted Williams receiver sight?
The straight stocked versions are nice. I grabbed a 1966 336 RC Texan SRC .30-30. It is my favorite Marlin. It carries, points and shoots so well. If it was only a .35 Rem. Congrats to you. 1886.

Well, the straight stock, the long slim forearm and the fact it's D&T'd for a receiver sight.
I've shot some pistol grip stocked Marlins in the past and each of them smash my cheek something awful. Must the shape of it. The straight stock is shaped differently and it doesn't cause me trouble at all.
I don't like the fat forearms Marlin uses on most of their lever guns.
Plus the entire package just looks nice to my eyes.

Yours has a fore end cap and no barrel band, where mine has two bands. I like the look with no band at the muzzle. Yours has a screw there, like a Win 94, right?
oops, my Rattler 94 has bands that look just like the Texan-wannabe!
Old Savage,
That's sweet. Looks like the .357 version of my .45 Colt Cowboy.
I do like the 1894 Marlins.
Ben_Rumson,
If the carbine is like the one MacEntyre's pics:
Unscrew the barrel band screws, unscrew the magazine plug screw, carefully remove the mag plug and spring, then pull the magazine tube out. Rotate the front band upside down and slide it forward off the barrel.
Some of the later Marlins have screw on front sight bases, but I wouldn't mess with unscrewing those tinsy 'lil screws just to pull the front band off.

I always considered a new, or "new to me' rifle coming home with me, as if it was a new family member being added. Nice job finding this gem, Im glad for you. Bruce
