450/400 vs 45-70

Post by rjohns94 »

I was asked a while back to show a picture of the 450/400 which I did, but it was a poor picture, showing no perspective. Below is attached a picture showing the 450/400 with a 400 grain RNSP and the 45-70 standard factory remington green box 350 grainers. The 450/400 will be feeding my my Sauer side by side double.

It should be noted that the 450/400 3" has a .409-.411 bullet with a SD over .300 (around .318) and going 2150 fps. The 45-70 can't really get a 400gr going more than 2000 fps safely and without pressure problems and the .458 diameter bullet has a SD less than .300 (.276 I think). So, the 450/400 3" bullet will penetrate further, and in more direct line than the 45-70's bullet. Also, very few 400 gr .458 expanding bullets will withstand over 2000 fps. The solids would, obviously, not be affected.

450/400 3" is a great cartridge and one of my favorite!

It was an Elmer Keith and Jim Corbett favorite, too, wasn't it?

yes, and it was a favorite in Africa until the .375 H&H came along. I'm thinking its going to be a wonderful hunting rifle.

Ruger is presently offering the Number 1 in 450/400 aren't they? Didn't know the answer to that for sure w/out a little digging. To those of you who have fired a rifle chambered for this round: What is the recoil like(compared to other large calibers)?

yes ruger makes a #1 in this caliber. My favorite pusher has one. This rifle is very easy to handle as a double, kicks about the same as a 375 H&H but not as sharp. I liken it to the recoil of my 12 bore Paradox rifle barrel, and a bit more than the 9,3x74R double I have. Does not kick as much as the 475 nitro.

Mike are you handloading this one? If so, are you loading any reduced loads, and if so, how is the regulation?

Ted, I plan on reloading for it. I have shot the solids and the RNSP to the same point of impact. I'm going to have a cast bullet mold made and will reload them. Will be fun to work into a nice a load with it. I'm currently casting rounds for my paradox. I will post when i get to reloading for this. You seemed to have found a good load for your rifle.

Yes, I have successfully duplicated with cast bullets the performance/regulation of the Federal factory ammo with which the rifle was regulated.

Now I am revisiting the reduced loads to try and find something that will come close to regulating at 500-600 fps slower, and make shooting this brute a little more enjoyable.

Mike,
That double has some serious meat around the chambers! How much does the rifle weigh?

Nice rifle and one (double rifle) I have never played with. Are the barrels fixed (regulated) to hit at one point of aim at a certain distance. I have always wondered if they will shoot 2 or 3 feet apart at say, 300 yards.--------------Sixgun

They are regulated at 50 meters and shoots at about 1.25 inches with two, two shot strings. I haven't shot it at 100 yards yet and I'm not likely to shoot it much past that. The rifle is right at 7.5 pounds.
