Shhhhh.....let's keep this quiet about Hunter Restorations..

Post by gizamo »

When I returned tonight a mailing tube was at my door. Some of you will recall from previous threads that I owned a cut-down (reads butchered) Model 1894 Winchester with a 3/4 length mag tube. It was originally a 26" barrelled Take Down configuration. And if it were unmolested, a valuable gun.

Unfortunately a prior owner cut the barrel down 4 inches. They basically hacksawed the barrel flush with the Mag tube. What was lost was the dovetail in the barrel for the Mag tube hanger, the set-back for the Mag-tube hanger, and finally the radius for the lever lug that holds things in place. So what was left was a 21-7/8" inch mess.

Now, truth be told...having lived up here in the puckerbrush ~ a short barrelled rifle would be the cat's meow. And I have never been enamored of the shortened fore-end on most Winchester take downs. A 26" barrel never balances right and a custom ordered short barreled take-down with the shortened forestock...doesn't either ~ at least in my hand...perhaps it's fine in yours

So was born this project gun. I didn't have to change the configuration of a valuable gun to get a true Maine Brush Gun.

Through this forum, I had been made aware of a gentleman that was doing extraodinary work on Winchesters. His name is Mike Hunter. All I have heard has been positive about Mike.

So I contacted him...He said send it...and on pure faith, I did.

I cannot tell you how old school this whole deal has been. I asked that he take only the forend section of the gun. Not the whole gun. That allowed me to ship it through the regular mail and have it returned that way. He shortened the barrel to 20", remounted the front sight in the correct setback (unlike how it had been done)... cut the mag tube slot, had a spare mag tube hanger that he installed on the gun, then radius slotted the receiver for the mag tube hanger lever. The turn around time was less then two weeks. He never billed me...just sent the bill in the mail with the returned barrel, forestock, and mag tube.!!!!

The total cost of the job was frankly, flooring..... I expected to pay much more.

As to the workmanship....it is unbelievable. Perfect and Flawless come to mind. Everything is as if it left the Winchester plant as on the day it was shipped...

So here is a absolute 100 percent post about a old school gunsmith that says what he means, does what he says, under-promised and over delivered.....

Can you tell I'm more then happy with the the job!

Anyone that is considering having top-notch restoration or repair work done to their own Winny... will be well served to use Mike Hunter.

One Happy Camper,

giz

Gizamo,
What you have described is really light weight work for Mike. I've had the privilege of tuning 2 original 92's that Mike completely restored. Both were round barrel carbines a 20" and a truly unique for real 14" trapper. These two guns look like they just came out of the box. Beautiful work. Mike even had to make a barrel for one of these.
I think Mikes best talent is his color-case work. Most folks don't give it much thought but to color-case a levergun receiver is an art. You don't just take it from the fire and throw it in to the water like some I've worked on. Mike knows how to block the receiver so it doesn't warp and still get the correct colors and hardness.
I had one of my SXS external hammer coach style shotgun featured in the Gun of the Old West magazine this year. But, I can't really take credit for how well it looked. Mike did the color-case work for that gun. it was the color-case work that made it really stand out.

Though I've never had Mike work on any of my rifles as of yet...and I say that because I'm still on the lookout for a rifle I want him to build...I must say that I believe that Mike's CCH is truer to the original Winchester colors more so than Turnbulls. I believe from the examples I've seen on this forum that Mike Hunter is the premier Winchester restorer. BAR NONE...

And Mike...I am looking for an '86 that I want to be done in 50 EX. I am saving $ as I type....

I know that Winchester never actually produced these, but one of these days, when I become saturated with money, I'm going to ask Mike to make me a 22" rapid taper octagonal pencil barrel in .33 WCF to mount that on a 1886 that's laying around here gathering dust. I also have a couple of extra complete front ends with nickel steel barrels, one of which I'll have bored to .40-82 WCF. The fun never ends. :)

Mike,

How unusual is this...

In this modern day and age...you can still get that custom ordered Winchester configured the way you wanted, even though Winchester is no longer with us. :)

Nice Winnie and I love'em, but I'll take that beautifully CCH shotgun in a heartbeat. Excellent colors.
