Stockmaker I Chose Was a Mistake
I needed the butt stock on my Winchester replaced.
Did lots of research and ended up contracting with Macon Gunstocks (http://macongunstocks.net/) to fabricate, fit, finish, and checker a new stock.
Sent my rifle in April.
Got it back in August and it was not even close to what we had agreed to in writing.
The owner Brian Macon was outraged that I had the nerve to criticize their work and told me his interpretation of our written agreement was not what he actually meant when he wrote it.
His written quote "I will cut, fit, finish, and checker the replacement stock to be just like the original that you provided".
His verbal reply "I didn't mean I would match the fore end stock finish or the fitting that Winchester did when the rifle was made back in 1936".
After much discussion, he agreed to rework the stock for a bit more money.
Rifle went back and for 2 months I could not even get a status on the rework.
It finally cam back yesterday.
I would strongly recommend staying away from them, even though their prices are good.

Good Luck

Re: Stockmaker I Chose Was a Mistake
Sorry to hear that. I was looking at Macon's stocks for my LC and now I don't know if their inletted stocks would be cut right. How was the fit to the receiver? I understand from your post they didn't do what they said they'd do and it didn't match the factory fitting. My concern is the inletting to the receiver as I'll be doing the fitting.

One of the top custom stockmakers I've ever seen is Jim Greenwood. He works out of Michael Murphy & Sons shop. He isn't terribly fast, nor is he terribly cheap, but I've seen him do magic with gunstocks...ever see a shotgun stock for a right handed shooter that's left eye dominant? Incredible stuff. His normal forte is high end shotguns that are worth anywhere from $2K to $40K.
If anyone is seriously interested PM me and I'll get his number for you.

Jim Greenwood in KS
Dave Wolfe in TX
Dennis Earl Smith in OR (www.thestockdr.com)
Bill Harvey in MD.
(Not necessarily in that order)
These are the only guys in this Country I trust to do an accurate, complete and perfect job on stockwork.

Re: Stockmaker I Chose Was a Mistake
I've bought two machine inletted, unfinished stocks from Macon that required a lot of fitting. Both were wonderful.
I'm sorry they did such a poor job for you. That bites.

Re: Stockmaker I Chose Was a Mistake
Macon has been mentioned here more than once.
...and not in a good way.
They seem to be adequate for unfinished stocks but the word has been rather poor when it comes to fit and finished work.
