One of the best horses I ever had was a 14.2 hh grade mare, which could weigh 950 lb. drippin' wet. There wasn't a mountain you could put in front of her she wouldn't get to the top of, if that's what you asked of her. Many hunting seasons, I rode her day after day, guiding, with only a day or so of rest between hunts. She lived to be 22 years old. Pulled a hip in the corral one Winter, and we had to put her down.

I now have a little mustang gelding, 14.1 hh, and tipping the scales at near a thousand pounds. No "quit" in him either.

Conditions in Wyoming are no better or worse than in S.D., but I learned a long time ago, for the most part, the size of the horse ain't all that important.

Or maybe it got busted off, snubbin' up some big, heavy cow-critter on the little pony.

Heavy roping is the only time I've seen much advantage to a bigger horse.

Professor, looks like a slick fork with square skirts and a Cheyenne rolled cantle or a really thick straight cantle. Also appears to have tapaderos, although I can't really see them well enough to tell. Terry, I looked for the horn too, but can't again can't see the picture well enough to see it.

In my younger days I had a little white mustang mare that went about 14 hands. She had a bar D bar brand on her left front shoulder. She was sure ornery on a cold morning, but she did like to work cows. I was told that she came from Montana. Small cow ponies were common when I was young.

the horn is there, there is a flaw in the photo on and above the saddles horn.
if you blow up the pic, you can see the rear edge of the horn .

that is a very interesting saddle. kinda a mix of styles, full double rig and deep dish
cantle usually will be found on a swell fork even to a bear trap, unusual on an a fork.
that deep dish will pinch the back of your thighs if you run your stirrups long like a
range rider, not so much if you keep 'em short like an arena rig or breaking saddle.

the cantle has no roll, but is deeply dished, giving it a look of thickness.
nope no taps, just shadows. look to be fairly wide bell stirrups, maybe wooden.

Cantle doesn't appear to be too deep (dished) for comfort. Rode one like that for many years.

Hope the varmint who stole it likes it as much as I did...

Some damage to the emulsion of the original plate or print has faded portions of the photo that make it look like there's shadow where there should be more detail.

Besides trimmin' the lil' hoss needs a curry comb, or is still haired up from the winter! Saddle appears as though it could be a half seat trail saddle, no taps, full double rigged.
