OT - Prayers, Please - Surgery

Post by JohndeFresno »

Hi, Levergunners.

I am going into surgery on Friday, September 18th to remove a cancerous prostate with the aid of a robot! It looks something like a big R2D2 with five slender retractable preying mantis arms, and it saves one having to be gutted like a fish for the procedure. One of its slender arms (inserted into the abdomen) holds a dual lens camera that provides the surgeon with a 3D view of one's innards. He sits at a hooded console and operates the device, and can be joined with another doctor at a similar console. The robotic extension takes out the shakes of the operator and performs very precise movements, while allowing a greatly magnified view of the subject. Pretty amazing, eh?

My father suffered terminally from prostate cancer, so I'm not messing with chemo or radiation. The specialists all say, and the biopsies seem to demonstrate, that the cancer has not spread; so I am praying for a quick recovery (an overnight stay, then home) and complete removal of this thing.

For those who may face a similar problem (and since many of us Levergunners are that age bracket), you can find several websites that have streaming videos of this marvelous new surgery technique - just enter:
Da Vinci Prostatic Surgery Video
...or similar phrase pasted into Google.

Here is a quick view of the device:

Thank you in advance for your prayers - it all ultimately rests in God's hands.

Lookin' up - John

Prayers up. It's amazing they can do that now without making huge incisions. Everything will go great.

You have my prayers for this procedure and that our God will keep you through this time. I took 8 weeks of radiation treatments for prostate cancer in 2003. My Lord held my hand all the way, and He still does.

Be sure they keep C3PO out of the surgical amphitheater. You know how he gets R2D2 agitated.

Good Luck and God Bless. I'll be keeping you in my prayers.

One request. Please ask a wife, friend, or family member to drop by here and give us an update.

John: Just had the surgery June 24.. had the choice of robotic or the older type surgery, chose the older type, as the Doc in Jackson Hole has lots of experiance with it.. My Gleason was 6.. found out about it with a PSA going up to around 5.75.. caught it really early. I was off work for two weeks, went back to short days, and now hitting it normally (truck driver). Doc said my margins were negative, lymph nodes negative.. no worrys.. now PSA is 0. used a pad for a month, but now not necessary.. gotta watch it when I sneeze though....PM me if any questions.. Hang in there.. everything will be Okay... Les

John - Prayers going up for you from Florida too.

I had a surgery and chemo for bladder cancer eight years ago. They managed to save all of my parts and their functionality. Medical advances of just the last few decades are nothing short of incredible. You have these same advances on your side too. Hang in there. - DixieBoy

Prayer said! My Dad survived prostate cancer a number of years ago, though being old enough for surgery to be a bad idea, he went with one of the radiation strategies. He is still energetic at almost 77 years of age.

Re: OT - Prayers, UPDATE

Post by JohndeFresno »

Quick "Range" Report -

Thanks to the mercy of God, your prayers and those of others, and a great physician and staff, the surgery "went as well as could be expected" (per Dr. Leung) and as a bonus there was no pain after surgery or the even next day. The Good Doctor said that it appeared like the cancer was contained in the prostate that was removed, with no evidence of it having spread. Two weeks will bring the final results on the sampling of surrounding tissues for sure.

One night stay overnight, and I took short walks this morning (starting at 6 AM); then came home at about 4 PM today from Fresno. I am resting quietly at home after enjoying a great home meal of Caesar Salad and a fancy pasta with vegetables with my wife and daughter.

I am praying for another Levergunner (who sent me a PM, facing same surgery soon) that this message will be of assurance to him.

Thank you, all. Blessings back to you! I'll be away from the keyboard for a few days, (I'm supposed to take it pretty easy) but all is well.

John
